“Special Birthday.”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

Just home from 2 nights at Rufflets and we had a lovely time, from the moment we checked in to we checked out was first class. We stayed in room 30 which was on its own at the top of the hotel, the room was huge a very comfortable bed also a sitting area with 2 chairs and a sofa and a desk and plenty of lamps to make the room cosy. The bathroom also was huge with bath and separate shower, and plenty of storage space.Overall the room was lovely, could maybe do with a wee make over. But no complaints from us as we were on a special rate through Itison. The hotel stands in lovely grounds and all the public areas are beautiful, there are lovely rooms to sit and relax in also a lovely bar which is so beautiful at nights with open fire and candles.Lastly the restaurant it is beautiful and all the food we ate was amazing, great choice at breakfast to our meals at night(3 courses) they were outstanding. All this and every one of the staff were very lovely and friendly, also a few extra touches that we loved-the teddy to put outside your door if you did not want to be disturbed to the bed being turned down and a hot water bottle in side.Lovely lovely lovely, will be back.x

We have stayed here twice and are already looking forward to returning soon. I read that some of the rooms have been refurbished but I honestly don't know what there was to refurbish. We have stayed at another well known hotel in the area and would recommend The Rufflets over anything else in St. Andrews.
The attention to detail is second to none and the staff go all out to make your stay that little bit more special. The quality of the food and bedrooms is outstanding.
Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Go for a turret room if possible.

Delighted to read that you had yet another great stay with us recently, and thank you for the feedback.

We do put a great deal of time, thought (and money) into making sure that the public rooms and bedrooms are kept to a high standard, and the owners are fully comitted to continuing with the refurbishment programme.

This, back-up with the attention to detail and the warm friendly service that the team strive hard to provide does help us achieve the aim of being one of the best hotels in the country!

Hope to see you again soon.

Just spent a most enjoyable two night stay at this wonderful hotel.the staff most certainly help to make this an unforgettable stay.Angela who is in charge of the restaurant went out of her way to make sure my partner was not eating anything he has an allergy to,the evening meal was delicious,a god choice and piping hot.A lot of attention has been paid to the decor, beautifully done with taste. The bedroom was large, with a big comfy bed,a huge power shower and bath in the bathroom,we just could find nothing to complain about at all,so thank you for a great time spent in this beautiful hotel,we will be back again very soon.

Room Tip: We were in the top floor, room no 36, very quiet and peaceful.

Dear Alice

Many thanks for taking the time to give us the feedback after your recent visit to Rufflets - we are all pleased to see how much you enjoyed the stay.

We do work ever so hard to be able to provide a wonderfully presented hotel, all backed-up with some of the best Scottish service that we know is so very important to our guests.

Being able to adjust what we do in the restaurant is something that we put a lot of effort into as we are aware that some guests do have some allergies that need to be identified and catered for to ensure that they also have a great experience. It is fairly staright forward to do, and we are surprised that more hotels and restaurants dont go to the lengths that we do to achieve this.

Hope that you will be able to return soon - and thank you for the special mention for Angela - she is a star!.

With my best regards,

Stephen

In summary: gorgeous, peaceful and well located. A quick shout out to Pat, a great guy who was helpful, chatty & made all the difference to our stay.

Stunning entrance, very well decorated (see photos) and extremely welcoming reception staff. Friendly, efficient and genuine. Great first impressions. Lounges are very grand but modernised & comfortable.

We were in Room 11, a turret room, beautifully appointed, lovely large bathroom & balcony. All requests regarding champagne in the room etc were fulfilled perfectly. Great bed. Towel rail in the bathroom made a bit of a racket at night - took us a while to locate the noise by turning off all of the radiators but it was soon peaceful again. So very, very peaceful - not a sound at this place which was appreciated. In the morning we could hear staff accessing a (linen?) cupboard outside in the corridor and walking up and down but really nothing to disturb during the night. A lovely separate little seating area with smaller TV looked out onto the gardens - do take a wee walk round, even in winter they're lovely.

We dined out in the town - 5 minutes via taxi, costing just £5.80. On the way home, the fare was higher due to the fare increase after 10pm, £7.20 I think, still reasonable. Great selection and variety of bars and restaurants. Can't comment on The Rufflets dinner service. Bar service was prompt and friendly. Very quiet at the time we were there though & the first pint poured was a little warm - turned out that the chiller was off so there was no charge for the lager and a replacement brought over as soon as it was ready. Very apologetic and we did not see it as a problem at all, just a little mishap. The young bar man even provided me with a pair of scissors to remove a rather annoying clothing label that was irritating me! He was so helpful and obliging.

I adored that every 20 minutes or so, a member of staff would ask how you were or if they could get you anything if you were sitting in the lounge or having a stroll through the house. It's nice to have staff that will acknowledge you and check with you, even when they're busy, rather than have to go looking for them or feel ignored. Such a great balance at Rufflets.

Breakfast, served between 7.30 & 9.30am is in the dining room/restaurant. We went down rather late, just before 9.30am but we were seated on arrival and the self serve continental selection was still fully stocked and fresh. There were a number if guests in and it made it seem a little busy so the 15 minute wait for our tea and toast wasn't too much of a surprise. The lady who served us did apologise and it didn't do us any harm :) Only 2 little tiny gripes, and I have to stress that they were dealt with at the time so this isn't a complaint, but the poached egg on my eggs Florentine was almost completely raw in the middle - sounds impossible but when I cut into it and the yoke remained complete and encased in still-clear whites that ran down the spinach, I just downed tools & waved to the lady who was on duty. As I say, she quickly and without question took my plate and had a tasty replacement sent out within 5 minutes or so. Great.

The other wee thing was that there were cigarette ends scattered about on our little balcony. But we mentioned it to the receptionist on check out as we only noticed it in the morning - not a huge issue but it's maybe been overlooked.

Ok, so asides from my nitpicking there - please stay here! It's beautiful! A luxurious, homely, friendly, peaceful and yes, Rufus is a delight...we loved our room, Pat was fantastic fun when we got back late at night and the setting is perfect. I would agree that many of the guests are more mature, and as such it may seem too laid back or quiet for some but as a couple aged 30 & 32, looking for a genuinely relaxing get away, this was perfect. We will be back. Please see the photos we've added, hopefully they'll show how nice our suite was.

Thank you all, especially to Pat :)

Pat is a real character (and one of many in the team) - and he is pleased to get a special mention.

We have noted the minor things that you have commented on and we will get these all sorted out easily, and we hope that we will be able to welcome you back in the very near future.

I had heard about Rufflets from friends who (raved) about it and decided to go and stay sometime
So we stayed on a Sunday evening and truly enjoyed it. It is a very classy establishment and the owners certainly take great pride in running it as you can clearly see the attention to detail.
Only slight mishap was that we had booked one night and stated that we would be bringing our pet dog as the Hotel states that it is 'pet friendly' and it is but this was not clearly stated when I booked it.We were allocated a room in the main hotel, which was truly lovely but I was not convinced that you would be permitted your pet in any bedroom and sat down and read the Hotel Information which was contained within the leather folder in your bedroom, luckily Little Ernie was still in the car waiting for us. I went down to Reception and asked Sam to clarify the Hotel 'pet policy'. I cannot praise Sam enough, she confirmed that no pets were actually allowed to stay within the main Hotel Building but that lodges were availble to accommodate owners who had pets and she would get this sorted out. Sam did this without any fuss and within 10 minutes we were re-located to Rufflets Lodge. We truly thought that this was much better as we had our own 'private accommodation' with our own seperate entrance which was very well set out and had everything that we could have asked for. Even a request for fresh milk was delivered to out lodge within 3 minutes of requesting it.The lodge was very clean, comfortable and so peaceful and we had a 1st class breakfast within the dining room of Rufflets the next morning. I would say that I was shocked to see that we had been charged an additional £10 for our little dog who sleeps within his own bed and the fact that he got nothing for this charge and his stay and at no time were we informed that there would be a charge for our dog. Considering all of the other Hotels and B&B's to which we have stayed, we have never been charged for bringing our family pet with us. However we were very happy with our stay at Rufflets and would definately return. The Staff made our stay most enjoyable and are truly well trained in how to look after their guests and nothing is any trouble to them.

Room Tip: We loved staying in the Lodge.

Many thanks for the feedback - we were all delighted to read how much you had enjoyed the stay at Rufflets.

I was concerned to read about the issues with your dog though. We are a Dog Friendly hotel, although we dont allow dogs into the main building as we have a number of lodges in the grounds that are ideally suited for guests who bring their dog with them, albeit with a small additional charge for the extra cleaning that this entails.

I have looked at the correspondance on the reservation and cannot see any note to say that little Ernie would be coming too, but I was delighted that Sam was able to rectify the situation so quickly and so well.

Hope that we might be able to see all 3 of you again soon.

We were warmly welcomed and although a little early our room was available within a few minutes, just long enough to enjoy a drink in the bar. We had the Turret room and it was perfect,a lovely view over the garden and a nice little sitting area, ideal for enjoying our valentine chocolates and bubbly. My wife was delighted with the flowers that were then delivered to our room. The bathroom was spacious and well laid out and also well lit, as was the room which I always think is a plus point as too many hotels seem to think bedroom should be dark and dismal. The bed was like our's at home, a super king and very comfy, had to move a troublesome little bear out of the way! We had a lovely meal in the restaurant in the evening and the service was superb. We then sat at the fire and had a long chat with a lovely young couple who had only been married for 3 weeks so we were able to tell them our secret of 44 years of wedded bliss,I do as my wife tells me !!. Breakfast was 1st class with a good choice and again served with a smile. We are planning to go back as soon as we can and cannot fault this hotel. Stephen and Craig should be very proud of their hotel and staff.

Room Tip: The turret room has no faults, looking forward to seeing the other rooms in the near future.

My husband and I stayed here for a night last weekend. Within walking distance of Sta ANdrews and a reasonale taxi fare to return to the hotel if you dont want to walk back.

Rooms was well appointed and spacious but I think this is probably one of the last ones to be refurbished. Loved the concept of Rufus the teddy!

Atmosphere in the dining room was lovely and service was spot on. Food was wonderful as the quality of the ingredients used were top notch. Extensive winelist and some reasonaly priced wine. Best ever sticky toffee pudding!

Stayed here as part of a deal and would love to visit again sooner rather than later.
