Owner description: On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the town's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews - the focal point of the Church in medieval Scotland. Today explore the underground 16th century siege mine and countermine and the bottle dungeon. There is a visitor centre with exhibition.

“Historic features”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2012

St. Andrews Castle is basically a ruin. However it has several important attachments to Scottish history and in particular to the Reformation period. So, although there's nothing spectacular, (except the example of mine and undermine), it is another castle that needs to be ticked off on your list.

“A castle steeped in history .”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

The castle is a very interesting visitor attraction ,with guides who can answer any questions you might have ,and displays and films telling of the history of the castle going back over the centuries ,and there is a well stocked shop selling souvenirs ,if you wish to buy something to remind you of your visit .
