“Reunion”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2013

We held our reunion here and dined and stayed at the Scores. It far exceeded my expectations. Rooms were comfortable and clean with nice furnishings, suitable for a Victorian building, the view of the West Sands spectacular and our dinner in a private dining room superb. Cannot fault the place the staff in all departments could not do enough for us adding to the ambience of our whole experience. All to be highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the West Sands where parts of Chariots of Fire were filmed and the R&A Clubhou...

Stayed here just the one night rooms were clean but dated, the hotel staff friendly and the meals (Dinner & Breakfast) were of good quality. Only fault was the rooms they were as I have already said somewhat dared , could do with a revamp, would stay there again, changes I would like to see apart from the redecoration is they need better quality loo paper.

Dear Mick M,

Many thanks for your review and I was glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay here. I have passed on your comments regarding the up dating of the rooms and I would anticipate that there is likely to be work in this area in about two years from now.
I look forward to welcoming you back again in the future and I have passed on your comments regarding the loo paper to our housekeeper.

Best Wishes,

Philip Rolfe

Just had a very special university reunion in St Andrews and the genius organizer knew the best place - the Scores Hotel.
Since our uni days 1989-1992 we had been there often and its still top class.
In Australia the best western brand is more associated with cheap motels, don't let that fool you - this hotel is a flagship.
The location is supreme, rooms very good - i was in a suite (old habits) and the comparable room in Oz would be 3 times the price.
Special mention to Benji at breakfast and Anna at reception who offer service you'd be lucky to get at the more out of the way Old Course Hotel. Well Done.

Room Tip: Suites are low down so no view but private access in and out of hotel.

Dear Laramber,

I was really pleased to hear of your comments from your reunion here last weekend and also to hear that you enjoyed a revisit both to this hotel and to St Andrews. It was great to hear your comments about the BEST WESTERN brand, particularly so, as so much has gone into improving the brand hotels in recent years.

I was also delighted to hear your comments about Benji and Anne and I have passed these on to them.

I hope that we will have the chance to welcome you back before too long and many thanks again for taking the time and trouble to review your stay.

Best Wishes,

Philip Rolfe.

I have stayed at hundreds of hotels over the years, but the Best Western Scores Hotel is definitely my favorite. The staff at this hotel are extremely friendly and helpful. Each of them went out of their way to make me feel welcome and had plenty of time for lots of front desk "cultural exchanges". The hotel itself is beautiful, well-decorated and super comfortable. Our view overlooked the gorgeous beach and bay. It was a short walk to everything that this delightful small city offered. The breakfast (included in the price of the room) was delicious and included tasty fresh local berries and fruit. Plenty of yummy choices every day. I especially enjoyed the creamy Scottish porridge! I stayed at this hotel for a week, and I was very, very sad to leave. If you are visiting St. Andrews, this is without a doubt the place where you want to stay. A tremendous value and a wonderful hotel!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room facing the beach. You can sit at your desk or in the bed and enjoy the go...

Bit late with this review, but still within TA rules, so here it is:

Fantastic location from which to explore the many delights of the charming and historic university town of St. Andrews - mere steps from the 1st tee of the Old Course and the R&A Clubhouse, and walking distance of West Sands Beach (think Chariots of Fire), the Golf Museum, the Dunvegan, the Cathedral and Castle ruins, St. Rules Tower (great view from the top), the Old Pier, Lade Braes Walk, the University Quad, St. Salvator's church, pubs, restaurants and the main shopping streets. Leuchars train station is 5 miles away and has free parking - Leuchars to Edinburgh Waverley by train was 17.10 pounds per person for an off-peak day return and journey time was about 1 hour.

Since we were visiting Sunday to Wednesday in the off-season (November), parking wasn't an issue and we always found a free parking space on The Scores, the one-way street at the front of the hotel.

The hotel itself consists of two converted 1880s Victorian townhouses, with new suites recently added where the buildings joined; we stayed in one of these - a King Junior Suite, room 310. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable (with even a hint of varnish still in the air) and offered panoramic views of West Sands and St. Andrews Bay, as well as the back of the R&A and part of the Old Course to the left. It was a bright room with dark wood furniture, green carpet and tartan bedding accents. The new black & white marble and tile bathroom was modern and spacious, with curved shower rod and heated towel rail. A couple of teething problems with the new room: 1) The shower took a long time to heat up and then seemed to be stuck on scalding (simple thermostat adjustment?) - this was reported to reception on check-out; and 2) the Wi-Fi signal was terrible due to the new room's extra thick fire door, so we could only use the computer downstairs in the bar/restaurant which was inconvenient - we were told they would soon be installing a booster just outside the room to improve the signal.

The entire hotel was non-smoking (very important to us). All members of staff we encountered were pleasant and courteous. The best thing about breakfast was the view - over-indulgence and cholesterol overload in Gretna meant that we felt compelled to restrict ourselves to the cold continental buffet, which was OK but expensive for what it was; however, the hot buffet offerings (including haggis) did look tempting :) We did not have dinner in the hotel.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel and we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Request a room (preferably one of the new suites) with a view of West Sands and St. Andrews Bay.

We have stayed here before and really enjoyed the hotel. This time the thing that really stood out was the hospitality of the staff. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left nothing was too much trouble. They found things out for us, recommended places to go and checked that we had everything we needed. The hotel was great but the staff make it a fantastic time. Thanks to all the people that looked after us.

Room Tip: Views across the sea are great but the rooms at the back are very nice as well.

Great location. Could hit a lob wedge to the Old Course 1st tee and close to St. Andrews nightlife. Friendly staff. Nice sized room. older hotel but nicely renovated. Highly recommend it for golfing trips.
