We visited the steak barn. Delicious meat and lovely selection of sides etc. All lovely. The only thing we felt was a negative was that the quantity of meat in the portions was very small. All four of us felt we could have had more meat for the money spent. Clearly excellent quality meat, melted in the mouth - but it was the most expensive on the menu! The seating is benches and long tables which means you sit beside folk you have never met! We met some lovely people and had a great blether.

Visited Balgove Steak Barn with my partner on Saturday 07/06/2014.
We had the cold cuts starter which was a bit underwhelming but worse was to follow.
We both ordered the sirloin steak along with a side order of onion rings and BBQ sauce.
The steaks were inedible; incredibly chewy and lacking in taste. We both ordered our steaks medium rare and that is how they came so cannot blame over cooking. My partner was too polite and managed to hide the half chewed bits in her napkin before giving up a third of the way through. She didn't want to say anything as it was my treat. I had to eventually abandon mine half way through given that the remainder was mainly gristle.
What a disappointment: we were both very hungry and when you are hungry your tolerance is normally increased: not so on this occasion. One occasional poor quality steak I can understand but 2 at the same table ???
All that aside the service was first class and with a smile: I was happy to leave a decent tip but purely for the service.
I complained about the quality of the steaks and the waiter apologised and said he had removed the drinks cost from the bill (glass of house wine and a beer) as a good will gesture. Personally I think the steaks should have been removed from the bill.
This restaurant came highly recommended by more than one source but what a disappointment.
We will not be back.

First visit to Balgove Larder and already a fan. We had morning coffee with roll on sausage served by very polite staff. Couldn't resist wander round farm shop and picked up a few treats from superb selection.
Will be back on next visit to St. Andrews for lunch as all the food looked delicious.

Love the originality of the Steak Barn - eating almost outdoors at rustic trestle tables and everything is cooked on one big smoky grill.
However the service is a bit odd as a previous reviewer remarked - you can't place your order at the same time as ordering a drink and there is a half hour wait for food with absolutely nothing available to eat before your order from the grill arrives. We had been out all day walking and cycling and were ravenous, so could easily have been sold a starter or plate of nibbles, olives, bread etc.
The food was great when it arrived - loved the corn on the cob.
