“Friendly and efficient - what more could you want?”
Reviewed 1 August 2013

Perhaps unusually I stayed at the Spindle for seven consecutive nights; I would think most stays are for a night or two.

I had single occupancy of a double room and while it was ideal for me, on essentially a business trip, the room might have proved a little small for two for such a length of stay.

Otherwise it would be difficult to fault The Spindle as all was attended to promptly and efficiently. Breakfast was excellent, not making the common error of mistaking quantity for excellence. I had the "Traditional Scottish Breakfast" each morning. The egg was certainly fresh, as its hen could be seen pecking around the garden!

Importantly for me the WiFi system was easy to use and fast.

I would certainly look to book there again when visiting St Andrews

We stayed at this B&B because we there was no availability in other B&Bs in St. Andrews for that day. John was very friendly and nice, and the location is lovely. While some minutes away from attractions, it is right by the burn, and quiet. That being said, the rooms are OK but average, the decor a bit outdated, beds not particularly comfortable (pillows were quite bad), and during the afternoon, when we stayed in for a little while, we could hear John snoring in the living room (unlike many B&Bs, which have separate lounges for guests and owners, The Spindle appears to only have one). This was quite uncomfortable, as the noise was awkward and unsettling, but it also felt awkward to wake him up and let him know.
Breakfast was also average. I had scrambled eggs with salmon (very little salmon, in fact), and the eggs were incredibly runny and bland.
I found that the value for money was not great.

We stayed a couple of nights in June 2013. The location is very good, easy walking distance to the centre of the town. The room itself was small and the en suite tiny. While ok for us, I would not want to stay here on business as there would be no space to do any work. Breakfast was OK though perhaps not as good as I would expect for the amount charged.

John, the owner, is friendly and gave us good advice as to where else to visit in Scotland.

Just 200ft stroll up a slightly upward lane and you are in the main streets of St Andrews. Warm and cosy room. Delicious and hearty breakfast. Host and big dog are both very friendly. The entrance by a small stream may be quite dark in the night. But no worries, the key comes with a keychain torch and the entrance lights up itself before you get to the door.

So close to the centre of town ( up a steepish little walk way and then straight on to Queens Gardens) yet wonderfully peacefull and quiet. I was talking to locals at the nearby Bowling Club who said they had known Johns family all of his life but never even knew that the B&B was there.
Hospitality was exeptional - attentive but not intrusive. Every mouth full of the breakfast was fresh, well cooked, nicely presented and above all tasty. Parking is easy on the street and is free. A great place to stay. I would really recommend foreigners to stay here if they wanted to sample some great British hospitality.

Room Tip: Nice sunny aspect from the double room at the front - with shower ....but the rear room has a bath.

Stayed in this comfy, quiet and well-run B+B by the Kinness Burn for the StAnza poetry festival - on my own for one night, before being joined by a friend. I arrived on foot and found the property easily, but it's a bit harder to locate by car. Small details like being given separate keys helped our visit run smoothly. The highlight for me was the home-laid eggs and homemade jam for breakfast. After which it's a very pleasant few minutes' walk into town.

Room Tip: The double room at the front probably has the edge on the twin at the back, but the latter has a big...

5-10 minute walk off South Street. Lovely little house by a stream. You can walk to dinner easily but sleep in blissful peace and quiet. Very comfortable with many thoughtful touches. Heaters, hot towel rail - you will be warm which is not a given in Scotland! The water for the bathroom is also hot and unlimited.
John the host is a lovely man who cooks a glorious breakfast including a truly outstanding porridge. For a modest charge he cooked for my student son as well
Excellent value and a great stay. I will be back
It can be a bit hard to find - google and iphone are not accurate. Take Kinnesburn Road off Largo road and follow it until you see a stream and some footbridges. Stop before the second bridge, walk across it and go right along the stream bank. You can't drive there but its only a few yards walk
