“A very special place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2011

My husband, son and I just got back from a wonderful week's stay at the Bell Craig Guest House in St. Andrews, Scotland. We stayed on the second floor in Room #2, one of the family rooms. The room. like the rest of the Guest House, is tastefully decorated and spotless. I loved the fact that it smelled as clean as it looked. Both of the beds, a queen and a single, are very comfortable and for my part, I slept like a babe. Breakfast is served in a sun-lit dining room. The menu is varied and delicious.

As for its location, the Bell Craig is situated half a block from North Street, one of St. Andrews three principal streets. This means that we were spared any noise of heavy traffic but were nevertheless only a ten-minute or less walk away from the beaches, golf courses, university buildings and downtown restaurants or shopping. The owners, Sheila and Sandy, are warm and pleasant and Hazel is simply great . Whenever we asked for her help, she went the extra mile, whether to map out for us how to get somewhere, give my husband and me access to a phone to get hold of our son or furnish us with an extra umbrella in a downpour. In fact, the friendliness of everyone at the Bell Craig is such that the day our son graduated from the University of St. Andrews, they surprised him with a congratulatory card. What a lovely gesture! This was our first stay at the Bell Craig but we will certainly be back.

Do not think it was the owner of this b & b that opened the door to us, as there was no welcome of any sort. The mattress on the bed nearest the door in Room 3 was a disgrace, you could feel the lumps and bumps just running your hand over it. The price quoted for a single room via e mail was not the same as on their web site. On the positive side the place was clean and it is in a excellent position in St Andrews.

We were booked in the Bell Craig for one night as we were attending a wedding reception at the University. The family room we stayed in was compact but very clean and comfortable. the room was nicley decorated. The Bell Craig was located perfectly for the venue we were attending and it was only a few minutes walk to the beach and the shops.

Good central location. On street parking, not easy to find a space at peak holiday time but this is so for most of the guest houses nearby. An interesting town. Lots of pubs and places to eat out. Worth a walk around the old course St Andrews on a Sunday as closed so good photo opportunities.

Because we arrived in St Andrews very early (7.30am) due to unforeseen circumstances, we decided to ring the B & B we had booked for the following 2 nights in case they hadnt been fully booked the previous night and by chance our rooms (my sister & husband also)might be available. Unfortunately, (for us!) they were fully booked but Hazel advised that she would get our rooms ready asap after breakfast. Our rooms were ready by 9.30 which was fantastic. We had to leave earlyish on the Sat am to catch a ferry from Stranraer (for info, 4 hrs more than adequate for this journey) again, Hazel, ensured that we could start our breakfast ahead of the usual time and so we managed to have our full Scottish b'fast also. Being facilitated like this made such a difference to our stay in St Andrews. When returning next time we (my husband & I, if returning on our own) would opt for Room No 1 rather than No 3 double, double rather than narrow twin, but we were aware when booking that that was the layout of the rooms and the only one available at the time. Location is excellent. Would be happy to recommend to friends.
