Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 17 Hotels in St Andrews
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 18 August 2012

The Old Course Hotel is the perfect golf destination. Besides being in the heart of Scottish golf it offers wonderful accommodations, outstanding food, and relaxing spa treatments. The short stroll into St. Andrews allows views of gophers and the town. There are darling streets to wander around for shopping, dining, pub time and sightseeing. The hotel really offers a perfect place for a holiday.

We stayed for two nights in this wonderful hotel. I can not fault the hotel on any level. After wonderful golf on the old course we tried out the spa. It was simply out of this world. All the muscle aches and pains of five straight rounds of golf dissapeared within minutes of being in the spa. Ideally located, we consider to stay only in the old course hotel on our next golf trip. Well done!

This is our second stay at this hotel and hopefully it won't be our last. The hotel itself is stunning and beautifully decorated and the location speaks for itself. Our 22 month old son was fussed over by the staff much to his delight and the luxury kids package which we'd booked provided us with excellent amenities for him. We did have to ask for a bath robe for him, and although at first they didn't think they had one small enough, when we returned from a walk we found a fluffy white robe for him in his cot. We were staying in a deluxe suite and it was beautiful, with 2 lovely balconies and fantastic views across the course - I especially enjoyed lounging on the chaise longue in front of the windows gazing out at the golfers and over to the beach. It was our wedding anniversary and the hotel provided champagne and canapés to help us celebrate which was a lovely touch as was the personalised welcome card from the Manager. It's these little touches which makes such a difference. Breakfast is fantastic with lots of choice. We dined twice in Sands and thoroughly enjoyed everything we had - especially the pork rib starter. Our son was provided with crayons to keep him occupied while we finished our meal. We used the pool during 'splash time' which we all enjoyed, although I do agree with a previous reviewer that it is a spa, and not everyone who uses the facilities during this time (3-5 pm) appreciates young children encroaching on their pamper time - the non-mummy part of me understands this although we did have a great time splashing around. The only issue we had with the hotel was actually after we'd checked out - the hotel put a 'hold' on money in our bank account (as is standard practice), however, after settling our bill, they did not release the 'held' cash - effectively double-charging us. When we noticed, we brought it to their attention and it was promptly dealt with, with the offer of an upgrade the next time we stay - an offer we hope to take up fairly soon! I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a hotel that goes just that little bit extra - yes, it is expensive, but it's worth it.

Room Tip: Let the hotel know if it's a special occasion.

I spent 3 nights here last week, along with my wife and my 15 year old daughter. From the moment we arrived on Tuesday, until we left on Friday, the service we received was impeccable.
Our room overlooked the front of the hotel on to Eden Park, and apart from a few small scuffs where people have left cases, the room was immaculate.
Breakfast in the Road Hole Restaurant was excellent, and set you up for the day.
As a golfer myself, the location of the hotel cannot be beaten. Adjacent to what is probably the most famous hole in golf, the 17th "Road Hole" meant that I could sit ,in the garden of the Jigger Inn, and watch the golf balls of those teeing off from the 17th, land in and around the fairway,or in some cases, beside us in the garden.
For golfers with an early tee off times, or perhaps going to stand in the queue for the Old Course, the hotel provides an early golfers breakfast from the Sands Grill Room between 5.00 and 6.30 am. Coffee/Tea, cereals, fruit, pastries etc. Nice touch.
On the day we left, we found the balcony on the 4th floor which allows you watch players tee off on the 17th, and follow the ball to wherever it may land. You may have to take cover when some poor unfortunate soul cuts too much of the corner, or possesses a natural "slice." At least my own disaster at this hole on the previous day was arrow straight, as it climbed in to a clear blue sky, and made it on to the top level of the roof of the hotel.
Whilst this was a short trip, we couldn't fault the hotel in any way. At the time we booked, we did look at other hotels in the area and based on the prices being quoted of around £600 for 3 nights B & B right in the heart of St Andrews, the Old Course Hotel, 5 minutes walk past the 17th and 18th holes offered the best value by a long way. For an additional £150 or so, we stayed in one of the top hotels in the world.

We loved every minute.

Room Tip: Book an Old Course rooms to look on to the 17th fairway.

Myself and friend stayed here for 2 nights on a deal that I was emailed from them. The staff are fantastic and can't do enough for you and very friendly. We ate in the Sands restaurant and can't fault it, meal was lovely. Drink is pricey but that's to be expected. We spent most of our time in the spa as the facilities are top notch. The room was comfortable and had everything you would need. Movies were great on the Tv after a hard day in the spa. Breakfast was in the fourth floor restaurant and was terrific and also up till 11.00 at weekends so no early rising. Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Don't get a room next to the lift, a bit noisy at night.

This is the third time at this hotel, it is a nice clean large hotel, but, a little out of keeping with the history of the golf course. Rooms are fine and breakfast ample. Great location on the first tee of this open course , but if you take your golg clubs with you, you are going to get tempted, and for £140 a round it will be costly ! Play one of teh other courses , at £38 .
Well worth a visit and a stay and if you wonder why the town is devoid of shops and restuarants travel 6 miles down the road to broughty ferry, where you will find everything you need.
