“first weekend at the old course”
Reviewed 23 December 2013

My wife and I stayed in a eden double room, it was perfect. The double bath was out of this world, with a cascading tap. The room was spotless, and everything we wanted was there. The breakfast was to die for, from the freshly prepared fruit and yoghurt, to the full Scottish. First class. Nothing to take away from our stay, but. We stayed for the masquerade ball, we had a great time, but as others have said the food was very poor. I had the Pollock as a main, and it was like cardboard, I was expecting more from the experience. The food in the Road Hole restaurant is great, but I feel they have to vary the Sunday menu as we are eating the same food all the time. The concierge are great, very friendly and helpful. Thank you...

Room Tip: Don't think that because the Eden rooms are the cheapest your getting an inferior room. Your not...

My husband and I stay here regularly and always come away feeling relaxed and pampered . We have two young children and The Old Course is our getaway. The staff are always helpful and the Spa is amazing. Booked in for next year already.

We stayed at the hotel for a Christmas party night and I have to say that we enjoyed the event immensely. We've stayed at the hotel before but never for an event.

I have to say that the meal at the party night was really disappointing. For a five star hotel, I was expecting five star food! The salmon cheesecake was dry and didn't really 'work.' My husband had the soup but his bowl was only half full and our table guests joked that someone else had already polished off half of his portion.
The turkey and trimmings were pretty bland and very manufactured-looking. Would have expected freshly made skirlie at least. It was all just 'average' and therefore very disappointing. The Christmas pudding was pathetically small but the deconstructed banoffee pie was very nice.
Our friends have attended the party night before and said that standards of food this year have noticeably dropped. Menu choice has been reduced apparently and there were no nice little touches like after dinner mints.
I'm so sorry that the food was a big let down. Thank goodness that the Old Course breakfast is still tremendous!

It is always a pleasure to return. From the moment you receive a genuine warm welcome, to the time when you have to say goodbye, it is like a home away from home. Great rooms, comfortable, pleasing and spacious. Great Spa. Magical staff, helpful and efficient. Excellent food, especially the Tasting Menu @ The Road Hole Restaurant and compliments to the young Chefs there, who do a great job. There are a couple of points.....the bath is deep and not user friendly. If you wish a pre-dinner drink and are dining downstairs, then its a bit of a trek from the 4th floor bar... We arrived a little early, the hotel was obviously very quiet, but we had an hour to wait....before entry !!!! The remainder has all been said, many times before.

If you want to treat yourself to proper 5 star treatment, look no further. Simple as that and enjoy. I had a room overlooking the car park and although the views over the golf course are fantastic don't worry as there is so much in the Hotel to enjoy.

Stayed in this hotel before but this time I took the family with me total of 4 rooms , We were all made very welcome with great Scottish Hospitality , from the front doorman to the check out , the rooms were specious very elegant and very comfortable, view over the 17th hole is breath taking the food in both restaurant [upstairs and the one downstairs ] was mouth watering [in spite of the price NOT CHEAP but worth every penny ]the leisure centre was very functional,
ALL the staff must be congratulated on achieving such a very high standard certainly this must come from a very motivated management

Room Tip: Ask for a golf coarse view. the dinner in the upstairs restaurant is a must experience

Although this is a pretty big resort style hotel with a traditional air about it, it somehow manages at the same time to feel intimate, friendly, modern and informal. This is probably mainly due to the staff, who are uniformly delightful - always polite, attentive, helpful and efficient.

We booked two interconnecting rooms for a family of 5, which worked very well. The rooms were plenty big enough for us all, with great views over the golf course and on to the sea. They were both spotlessly clean and well equipped, with free internet (although patchy wireless in one room, but a minor niggle). The most surprising thing was how quiet they were, with little noise finding its way in, despite there being a couple of big pre-Christmas functions on during our stay.

The food was very good, with excellent breakfasts. We had a very good meal in the main restaurant, some of us having the superb tasting menu. The pool and spa were lovely, with the rooftop hot-tub, which we had to ourselves under the stars, being a particular hit.

The hotel is easy to find, with good parking and an easy 10 minute stroll into town, St Andrews being one of the loveliest places to visit in Scotland.

Room Tip: The details on the website are pretty clear about what you get for your money, based on size and vie...
