“Scottish Hospitality at its best.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2010

When I originally booked, I thought that the nightly rate was extremely expensive, but after staying at the hotel for three nights I have to say it was worth every penny. From the moment we arrived the service was impeccable from reception, room service, restaurant staff and the golf team. Dinner in the Road Hole restaurant was exceptional. Jigger Inn was a pleasant alternative, however we were a little disappointed in the restricted menu in the Sands Grill ( no vegetarian options.) If you want to spoil yourself for a few days on a golfing holiday then this is the ultimate. venue. It was my 60th birthday trip and the staff went out of their way to enhance my celebration with unexpected gestures and gifts.

We stayed for two nights and were pleased with the hotel, but at 320 pounds per night, it should have been good. Excellent service from all the staff. Fine, but expensive food in the restaurants. The ony issue is that there is no air conditioning and our almost west-facing room got very warm in the early evenings. There's a ceiling fan, but it wasn't enough to make sleeping comfortable. Their Duke's Golf course, a ten minute shuttle ride away, doesn't have the pedigree of The Old Course, but it was great fun and in terrific shape.

Stayed here for our 10th anniversary, upon arrival we were made most welcome by all staff we came across. We were shown to our room and once in there was a knock at the door and the waiter had champagne and canapes.. Rooms are amazing too and a bath like an olympic swimming pool.
We had a few leisurely drinks in the famous Jigger Inn which is joined to the hotel but has a whole diffrent apperance. It looks out on to the world famous 17th green.
Love this bar bee a few times and always get that welcome feeling from the staff.
We were on the dinner bed breakfast rate and you get £45 each allowance, excluding drinks. Now as this is a 5 star hotel we thought this might not be alot of food as you would expect prices to be expensive, well we could not even come close to hitting the target, even with a £25 steak which was to die for...
This was in the restaurant on the ground floor.
The only slight disappointment was when we went for breakfast to the top floor road hole restaurant we were told there was a 45 minute wait, which was disappointing as we were looking forward to having sunday breakfast and reading the papers looking over the course, nevertheless we went to the ground floor restaurant and again the breakfast was out of this world..
All in all this is the 2nd time stayed here and my wife andI who have stayed in top hotels around the world always look at the old course St Andrews as our favourite and the great thing is its 40 mins along the coast from us...

Cannot fault this lovely hotel. The service and friendliness was exceptional. THe rooms are very comfortable and the pool/ spa area is nearly perfect; we thought the pool was a bit small! We ate at the jigger inn and the quality of the food was excellent. Same for breakfast which was taken with breathtaking views of the golf course. A family friendlty hotel!

Have just return from staying at the hotel with my adult son and quite simply cannot fault it. Yes it is expensive but from the moment we parked the car on the free car park to when we left four days later the whole experience was amazing.

The service was always very good and I commented to one of the young bar staff about this. He informed me that by comparison to most hotels the staff are very well treated and that in turn they like working there; this certainly seemed to show in the service they give!

The spa and gym are excellent, the breakfast choice was huge and include all the healthy options you could want and the golf staff provided free transfers both there and back to all the local courses in St Andrews that were always on time.

I would guess that about half the rooms overlook the golf course and if you can afford the extra for one the view is simple breathtaking.

I have stayed in many hotels all over the world and rate this the best that I have ever been to.

An excellent hotel with professional, friendly staff. Our only gripe on our stay was the extensive building work around the lobby area, resulting in a vastly reduced lift service, closed public rooms and toilets only available on the top floor.

Rooms and top floor restauant were unaffected and very good. The scenic views are lovely but it is a slight walk out of town. Car park spaces were at a premium but we would go back for the friendly, cheerful staff.

We decided to splash out on a Saturday night stay, upgrading to a room with an Old Course view. This was well worth the extra £50 and looking over the 17th hole, up to St Andrews and out to sea just set us up beautifully for a much needed special night away.

The room itself was clean, luxuriant and tastefully decorated throughout. Especially attractive were the prints of St Andrews from days gone by. Tea & coffee were available along with complimentary mineral water and we discovered some nice little hotel extras cunningly hidden within a pouch in a hanger within the cupboard. We also appreciated the free movies on TV but the star of the show was the deepest bath we'd ever seen - the perfect venue for a pre-dining bottle of bubbly (it was our wedding anniversary and when you're in your late 40's every chance of luxury has to be grasped!)
We dined in Sands Grill purely because we couldn't get a suitable time for the main Road Hole restaurant. Early booking is necessary especially for a Saturday stay.

The meal itself was pleasant but my wife had to send her steak back as it hadn't been cooked to specification. Free coffee was delivered as compensation. The staff seemed slightly off the pace as on two or three occassions it was difficult to attract attention. It wasn't busy and we saw some staff talking to eachother instead of attending to customer needs. This was a minor gripe though and as a rule everyone was very friendly, enhancing the experience.

Earlier we had visited the spa facilities which were shown to us before use (as was our room at check in). Unfortunately it was busy and no hooks were available for towels/robes etc. The roof top hot tub was fun but it's at this point you can view some upgrading is required to the appearance of the hotel. Again, a minor negative.

All in all the experience was a highly favourable one and we look forward to returning one day soon.
