I was surprised when we arrived. The location is truly excellent, but other than that it was a bit of a disappointment. Pretty run down and in need of a remodel. Cleaning only goes so far. Much of the infrastructure needs to be replaced. The staff (Mike) was terrific. The 2nd floor bathroom needs a giant douche. The duvet that I was offered needs to be chucked.

Spent one night here recently on way through St Andrews. Good for one night and great central location. Found an on-street car park nearby. Hostel had all you would need and good sized kitchen and communal lounge area. Could do with being slightly tidier/cleaner. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Upstairs dorms are away from entrance/lounge/kitchen noise.

I was worried about staying here after reading some of the reviews, but we had a great couple of nights. It is probably one of the friendliest places to stay in Scotland!
We arrived having walked 27 miles and were exhausted. We showered; they were nice and hot, but the ceiling was all covered in mould so don't look up!
We stayed in an 8 bed room on the first night and this was fine, but people had sprawled their stuff all over the place, which was inconvenient.
The kitchen is a bit shambolic! It's the only hostel I've stayed in where people don't wash and dry all their stuff and put it away so the kitchen isn't very appealing to use! The fridges are rammed with food too so it's hard to use those.
The lounge has a big TV and Sky; there are sofas and a large table to sit around.
We met some really lovely people and the staff were friendly and fantastic (they seem to do all the tidying up in the kitchen each morning instead of enforcing normal hostel etiquette). It's a good place to stay and the location is great, but don't expect lovely washing facilities. Also, shared sex washrooms is not ideal; makes washing and changing more stressful!

At 1st it was a shock 2the system. The staff were grt &very friendly,as were the other guests. Mixed dorms& toilets aren't ideal. Not enough toilets or showers 4number of beds. Not enough storage space/fridge space& kitchen 2small 4size. No place 2put ur gear except on floor as near ur bed as u can get amongst every1 else's bags etc. the rules ar not enforced so people leave dirty dishes etc lying around& the staff hve2 tidy it up. Clothes horses&washing sprawled in every nook&cranny? A good overhaul 2clean it up, more shelves, fridges& a freezer, drawers or units 4ur gear then the rules enforced& it would b a much more pleasant stay. That being said aftr u get over the shock& accept the surroundings it wasn't 2bad& weather was grt which always helps.

Having never been to St. Andrews it was a fantastic hostel to have stayed at for my trip, and have already recommended it to friends. Its so central, inexpensive, friendly, sociable, spacious, clean, flexible and fabulous! Absolutely worth booking a night or three.

Room Tip: Bottom bunk by the window for a night time summer breeze

St Andrews Tourist Hostel is the "best accommodation in town" is just one of many quotes I heard during my time at the hostel, and I am not going to disagree. It is extremely good value for money and the staff are efficient, helpful, polite and went beyond the requirements of the job to ensure everyone in the hostel had a comfortable stay. As a long term resident I appreciated the incredible support that the staff offered. The facilities at this hostel are worth far more than the cost that the guests pay.

I met people from Nigeria, Spain, United States, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, China, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Portugal, Czech Republic and the UK among others. The hostel was a reflection of the location, a global melting pot. The hostel has helped me settle back into St Andrews and I have met several people I will stay in touch with for the rest of my life. I would recommend the hostel to anyone who needs accommodation in the town, including groups of golfers.
