As mentioned by previous reviewers you have to queue for a table, there were some grumbles from those waiting re people hogging tables just drinking coffee..but worth the wait. We had the soup and panini followed by cake, which hit the spot. Prices were reasonable and the premises were clean. The only negitive was the the slow service.. we had to remind the staff that we were still waiting to se served with our order (I think they forgot about us). There is an issue about groups larger than 4 taking chairs from other tables thus limiting future seating numbers. There is also a queue at the till as there are lots of youngsters in the town and they tend to pay individually.

The initial approach to the cafe is less than inspiring since the cafe is situated behind the public toilets. However, this is not a problem at all. The cafe is pleasant with seating both inside and outside. It is quite small so often there is a queue waiting for a table. The furniture has a very solid appearance and indeed when one tries to move the chairs you realise how solid and heavy they are. The cafe serves soup-of-the-day (Tuscan bean today but on my last visit there was a choice of two) either in a cup or in a soup bowl when it comes with bread and butter. There are sandwiches (white or brown) or panini, both with a good selection of fillings. All come with coleslaw and salad but they are happy to miss either of these off for those who ask. In fact they are very happy to accommodate your wishes and they'll give you a half-sandwich if you're not too hungry. They also have a range of salads and a selection of children's dishes. The cafe also serves the usual selection of coffees and teas. The quality is outstandingly good in my opinion, the waitresses are keen to provide what you want, even if is not quite what is on the menu, and the prices are very reasonable indeed. For example sandwiches range from under £4 for egg mayonnaise to £4.85 for a turkey and cranberry one. Panini are about £1 more than the sandwiches. Filter coffee was £1.50 while an Americano was £1.75 (but worth the extra). They also have delicious scones and cakes. If you come in the afternoon, you get coffee for £1. One point to remember is to have enough cash with you because they don't take other forms of payment.

Ideal Lunch Spot in St Andrews, situated in centre of town. Can sometimes wait for a table but well worth the wait. Terrific soup, sandwiches etc not expensive. They even have an outside area now adding to their seating capacity great for those summer days when we see the sun.

Had the dog with us so the outside seating area was ideal. All had various panninis with a side salad and all were very good. The soup with bread looked delicious and the service was quick considering it was a busy lunchtime.

It was cold outside and the home made potato soup and rustic crusty bread was generous and tasty, and shared in the company of good friends. It was also only £3, so we didn't expect it to be so good. That's why it's a 5/5. Thank you Cafe in the Square.

Location 4/5
Food 5/5 (soup & bread)
Menu 3/5 (simple choices, but when done well this is often this is best- maybe I need to try the rest)
Value 5/5 (£3 each)
Staff 5/5 (friendly)
Ambiance 4/5 (indoors: simple calm décor, clean and quiet)
WCs 5/5 (like new)

Other Observations- there isn't a waiting space, but the staff didn't mind us hanging around for 10 minutes to get a table. The tables and chairs are very chunky/bulky and take up a load of space. This is good when you're sitting at them because you have plenty of space at the table and around, however I suggest some smaller, lighter and less chunky furnishings and then they could cater for more diners- so less chance of being turned away or waiting.
