Fairmont St Andrews
Ranked #4 of 17 Hotels in St Andrews

The rooms were pleasant and comfortable and just about 5 star level, though without the little touches that distinguish the real thing. (You wouldn't be tempted to take any of the toiletries home, there was no TV channel guide, you had to "request" a turn down - and there was no chocolate on your pillow!) The rest of the hotel is low grade corporate, with no areas you would be tempted to linger in. The view from the (sea-view) rooms over the course and bay was great (magical one night) and there is a cliff walk nearby, otherwise the surroudings would only attract active golfers. The "fine dining" restaurant was decent, and decently priced, with some decent wine on offer.(A friend who had been previously noted the restaurant had been reduced in half since the opening - no real takers among the golfers). The service staff were friendly and attentive. The breakfast room - the Atrium - is appallingly like a poor airport departure lounge and the food on offer would disgrace a 3 star hotel. This was the nadir of an otherwise pleasant stay. Most of the guests seemed to be golfers, so perhaps they were on a package which would bring the price down to 3 star levels, but if you are paying 5 star prices, and expect a 5 star experience, and are not desperate for a round of golf, avoid the Fairmont St Andrews. They also wanted £18.00 for an internet connection.

Nice location a bit out side of St. Andrews. Shuttle in to town was nice but the last shuttle goes at 6pm so you must take a taxi back. Would be nice to have a few later shuttles for pick up. Full Scottish breakfasts each morning nothing great but lots of food available. Clubhouse restaurant very nice after golfing and had dinner here one evening which was very nice with great views.

Newish, extremely spacious and high quality property in commanding position on the bay surrounded by immaculate golf courses with acres of free parking. Not being golfers, we can't comment on the golf, but there were lots of players staying and all seemed very chipper. Hotel is a good choice for families visiting students in this ancient and attractive university city. Ample breakfasts, rooms are big, clean and comfy with all the trimmings, and the spa is first rate - a decent sized pool plus steam room, sauna etc. We dined in the town to get a feel for the local scene but the hotel restaurants are well spoken of. There is a handy free minibus to and from the town centre a mile away. Overall, a very professional operation and staff are highly trained. Recommended.

Hotel - Lovely setting, well-kept grounds and the hotel itself is immaculate. Ample choice of restaurants & bars and the dart board & pool table was a nice touch. Being a relatively new hotel, I felt it lacked a bit of character but this wasn't a major issue. Leisure facilities were all fine and didn't have any complaints.

Rooms - Modern, comfortable and with all the mod-cons I'd expect. My only gripe was when I opened what I thought was a nice, cool Budweiser from the hotel mini-bar after a long round of golf, only do find that some moron had obviously drunk the beers, filled it up with water and put the caps back on. This was the fault of a mindless idiot though rather than the hotel itself.

Breakfast - Wide selection of hot & cold food but I was disappointed not to find any Wheetos (my favourite) in the cereals section. The hot breakfast was tasty but maybe the management should consider stocking Wheetos in future.

Great location, great hotel, service could have been better. Please do not leave anything of value in your room! A friend and I both had money (loose change) stolen from our rooms. The management of the hotel after supposedly investigating the matter refused to inform the local police. They said that they had no reason to believe their staff had been involved effectively saying that my friend and I were both telling lies.

What a wonderful stay at this luxury hotel, from the minute we arrived at the entrance, the staff were on hand to help. Check in was a breeze. The spacious room was a surprise, a large bed with the best mattress in Scotland and the bathroom with a large bath and walk in shower.
The concierge was on hand to provide advise on restaurants nearby.
All the staff were friendly and always available. A surprise considering the Seniors Championship was on the go at the same time of our stay.
We look forward to visit again and play golf at St Andrews.

Stayed at the Fairmont for 5 days with my family and on the whole was very good. I didnt realize it was so far from downtown but they do offer a free bus service which was great. My wife and daughter enjoyed the spa (whilst i was golfing of course). The staff were on the whole very helpful and friendly. If anything the place lacked personality and is a little far out but still very good.
