The West Sands is a great place to clear the cobwebs after a hard day's night. Lots of space and fresh air and miles and miles of open sands(when the tide is out) to walk, jog or just enjoy the scenery.

Vast expanse of golden sand - great for morning runs, family walks and fun! The Links clubhouse welcomes non members - we had a good breakfast there with views over the first and last holes of the Old Course.

My day at this beach was one of my most enjoyable in St Andrews. It is right next to The Old Course, and the aquarium, so it is easy to plan your day around the beach. Bring a bag to collect sea shells. The water was chilly at the end of June, but I was still able to get in.

We have been to St Andrews many times in the past but never made it onto the West Beach. This time we made an effort to make sure we went on there and we are so glad we did. It wasn't the warmest of August afternoons when we went on but we spent a good couple of hours on this fantastic beach. Hidden away behind the golf course but with free parking, toilets and easy access this is one of the best beaches we have visited in the UK. The long stretch of sand made famous from the opening scenes of Chariots of Fire was clean and surprisingly very quiet. We set up a family game of rounders and spent 2 hours running across the fine golden sands in a very competitive game - even by our standards! The views onto the town are lovely and we will be making sure to come back to the West Beach when we return to St Andrews.

The beach from the opening sequence of Chariots of Fire. A very long, clean beach with great views of the town. Free parking. Toilet and refreshment facilities nearby.
