Arghh! Ran short of time to take a stroll on the beach, but was able to smell the sweet seabreeze sailing in from the western shore.

What an iconic beach.......St Andrews golf course backdrop; Chariots of Fire movie; many, many hours spent looking at pictures in books and travel mags; watching the British Open on telly and wondering, will I ever get to see this place for real?

Well, by jove, I've done it!!!!!

The wonderful thing about the West Sands beach is that it has something for everybody - and at all four seasons. On windy days people fly kites and steer buggies towed by huge overhead kites. On calmer days, you can simply stroll along the beach towards that iconic St Andrews townscape view. We were able to paddle right at the very end of September. There are public toilets next to the beach and a kiosk selling hot drinks and snacks. Best avoided during golf tournaments when you have to drive past what seems like miles of coaches. A walk straight ahead at the end of the parking takes you to the Eden estuary, which is well worth exploring.

Well worth a walk along West Sands, not as exposed as East Sands and there is easy and free parking.

Such a lovely beach on a beautiful town great to go on a summers day. Areas on the beach can vary between being clean and dirty. While on the beach we saw numerous dogs being unsupervised by owners and running the beach riot. Saw a German sheperd knock over a little girl. The owner just saying 'don't worry he's friendly' doesn't matter. We also saw a number of owners letting their dogs foul on the beach. We offered them a carry bag but they looked at us as it they had been made eat it and one of them said 'so what it's only dog s**t'

Lovely beach but please be aware of the dogs mess and owners
