“Not worth the money or effort”
Reviewed 13 July 2011

At least for the four of us, and other tables around us, the lavender pudding is to be avoided and should never have been put on the menu. Otherwise the food was fair. On the service side they seem to be trying to do too much with too little and too inexperienced of staff. Service was relatively OK until we were done with our main course and then it fell off the deep end as they seemed to go in to complete disarray including an open argument between two employees. It took a long time to clear our plates, even longer to get dessert menu's, and then the long wait on dessert and drinks.

We enjoy splurging once a month or so and don't balk at high prices, but we expect a commensurate high level of food quality and service that were not present at the Road Hole.

“Fabulous, decadent and the tastiest food ever!!”
Reviewed 16 October 2010

Have just returned from the Old Course Hotel this morning and ate in The Road Hole last night as my 40th birthday celebration. What an experience. The service was second to none and the food was amazing. Every single piece of food was flavoursome - even the smallest mushrooms in the world packed a huge punch. My husband and I tasted so many different flavours and we will not hesitate for a second to back again for another visit. We opted for the 6 course taster menu and it was out of this world. Venison, Scallops, Chicken and Foie Gras, Salmon, Beef, all topped with the most amazing mandarin jelly, dark chocolate sorbet and the best apple crumble souffle I have ever tasted. We counted that we were served by around 8 different staff members/sommeliers etc. Even got a birthday cake. Overall, a fabulous experience and a remarkable, memorable 40th !!

“fine dining but........”
Reviewed 3 September 2010

We had dinner at the Road Hole Grill after playing (and walking) 27 holes. We had the 3 course dinner. The portions are very, very small. After walking 27 holes we were hungry and our dinner wasn't nearly enough. We are not big eaters, but under the circumstance this dinner was not lage enough. In a location like St. Andrews, where many people are hungry after walking the golf course this type of restuarant is totally out of place. I can't believe any of the golfers would appreciate it. This may be fine dining but this restuarant is totally out of place. After eating here we had to go to Jiggers Pub and order a sandwich.

“Room With a View”
Reviewed 9 June 2010

After being generally disappointed with the food offerings in St Andrews, we ate here on our last evening and it made our trip (the culinary part). Obviously, the view over the Old Course and Swilcan Bridge on a sunny evening would enhance any locale, but the rest of the offering was up to the outstanding view. The service was excellent and the food was up to the standard of the restaurant......GBP 46.00 for a three course meal represented appropriate value for money in our view. We will certainly return.

“Nice pub in old stationmaster's house next to hotel”
Reviewed 23 November 2009

Nice contrast to the modern Old Course hotel next door.
Staff are friendly but not particularly efficient.
Worth a visit if you are in the area and looking for a wee nip of whisky etc. I would probably eat elsewhere.
