“Clean, a bit quirky, and very friendly”
Reviewed 30 June 2013

We had just two days in Glasgow and were looking for a place centrally located that could handle 4 of us at a reasonable price. Adelaides fit the bill. Located just a 20 minute walk from Queen Station it was also easy to walk to many of Glasgow’s other main attractions. We found Bath Street to be fairly busy/noisy with buses, cars, and clubs, so if you like it quiet best to ask for a room that does not face the street. Our room was clean and had lots of space for 4 adults. It was not "4-star fancy" by any means but was clean and comfortable. We found the continental breakfast to be more than enough though it was nice to have the option of ordering a hot meal. One of the quirky aspects of Adelaides is that it is located in a church building so there is a lot of other activity going on including an active day care and one evening there was a revival which included a concert but the loud music respectfully ended at 10 pm. Those things that some might find to be shortcomings were certainly offset by the staff who were extremely friendly and helpful, particularly Ted who treated us like old friends right from the time we made the original reservation (months in advance) to when he had us safely heading off for our next destination.

I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. The bathrooms at this property were unbelievably filthy. We actually went out and purchased ajax cream cleaner to be able to bathe in a somewhat sanitary environment. The picture of the towel being held up displays the filth that came up after about one minute of cleaning. Oh, and there were toenails in the shower too.

In addition to the poor hygiene standards, there were holes/dents all over the walls, vomit-looking-paint splattered on some of the walls (we really didn't know what it was), the mattress was exceptionally uncomfortable, and the TV was laughably small (9" LCD, maybe?).

In terms of security, their policy is that you leave your room key with the front desk whenever you leave the property. This system would work if they verified who you were when you came back. There were numerous occasions where we gave our room number and were just given the key without any steps taken to verify who we were. Disappointing.

Now, the Front Office Manager has typically responded to these negative reviews with a 'you should've told us' mentality. The truth is, you should be holding your housekeeping staff to a significantly higher standard, and your rooms should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected before and after every single guest stay. The best course of action you can take is to improve your standards, and take the time and energy to personally inspect and scrutinise every single room before it is deemed salable. If you take these measures, you will put Adelaides on track to guarantee satisfaction, and you won't have to rely on others to tell you when something is wrong.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Room Tip: Do not stay here. Take your money elsewhere.

In reply to your review of our guesthouse I was most disappointed to read this. Yours is the only review we have had in years which has been unsatisfied regarding cleanliness. All rooms are checked as you have suggested and I am very surprised that if you were so unhappy with the state of the room you did not complain once throughout your stay!

Some of our bathrooms are getting upgraded this autumn however I take exception to your "disgusting" review. I do not understand at all your description of vomit looking paint or holes and dents over the walls, all rooms are freshly painted and of course due to the historic status of the building the walls will have some character to them.

All of our beds are extremely comfortable a feature which is habitually commented on in other reviews. All the televisions are 19 inches I do not think that the 9 inch television that you claim was in your room is manufactured, I think this comment is indicative of the gross exaggeration of the whole review.

As for the key being given out without the quest being for example finger printed? This system has worked for over a decade because we pride ourselves on our personal service and all reception staff knowing who guests are, there is also a description of each guest given to each member of staff as they start there shift.

Please when you are staying anywhere else you should complain about any issues of service at the time as it is very unfair to comment in this way without any chance to redress the problem raised.

I had the need for somewhere to lay my head in the city centre between an evening meeting and catching an early train to London, so I booked a single room with a shared bathroom at Adelaides.
The guest house is in part of a city centre baptist church in an excellent and impressive building on the corner of Pitt Street and Bath Street, so it's very well located for Sauchiehall Street and the theatres.
The hotel has secure entry and a manned desk, which prevents non-guests walking in to the site. My room was a single with a shared bathroom, which put me in the basement but with a huge window. Decor okay if not a la mode and the room was clean. There was a wash basin in the room, which compensated for sharing the bathroom. The bathroom itself could do with a lick of paint and a refurb, but perfectly clean and acceptable to use.
Comfortable bed and a good night's sleep.
I'd be interested in trying an en-suite room for comparison.
I left too early for breakfast, so I can't comment on that.
You will notice that it's in a church and part of the church community's outreach programme, so there are a few discreet tracts in the room and plenty of information on the church's vision and projects, but nothing to make anyone not looking to be confronted with someone else's faith uncomfortable.
There are various guides in the room, as you might expect, but several of these were out of date.
Yes, I'd use Adelaides again, but en-suite next time in all probability.

This rather centrally located – near the Glasgow School of Art – 8 room guesthouse has credentials I've never encountered before. It is a guest house, a childcare center, a hireable auditorium, and a Baptist Church. These combine to give it a certain eccentric charm. It has sound-dampening, thick fire doors, so one is hardly aware of screeching children, church services, or symphony rehearsals or performances, all of which occurred during our six night stay. There is no lift, and our room was on the second (uppermost) floor. The room was clean, well fitted out, the toilet and bath free of flaws. Maid service was attentive. The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day, but at late hours, one must ring a bell. The tasty Scottish cooked breakfast is served on weekdays only, with "expanded continental" (cold cereal, milk, yogurt, juice, cheese, bread, butter, jam, tea/coffee) breakfast 7 days a week. For cooked breakfast on Saturday or Sunday morning, walk 2 blocks to (acceptable) Wetherspoon's (from 0800 even on Sunday).Ted is quite the character. Do exercise care not to refer to "the hash key" as "the pound sign," which, in the UK, for heaven's sake, is of course "£." If you err, Ted will ebulliently (and good naturedly) improve your grasp of the distinction. The free WiFi signal just barely reached 802.11g devices such as smartphones & tablets, but handily reached 802.11n devices such as portable computers in our room which was the most remote of all the rooms. One would sometimes have to leave room 8 and go into the hall to connect a smartphone, but once the connection had been made, one could return to the room without losing it. Small print jobs (boarding passes, &c.) can be done gratis from an available computer in the lobby. The staff are extremely obliging and helpful. The staff are also VERY attentive to correspondence, which is certainly not true of some of the nearby, more expensive, very much larger, numbingly charmless chain hotels nearby. Plan far enough ahead to stay at Adelaides. Very many pubs and restaurants are nearby. For Indian, we liked Rawalpindi and Akbar's Glasgow. We went to the west end for a Scottish meal at Wee Lochan -- do not pass up Wee Lochan (see that review).

Room Tip: Tell the staff what you seek and let them guide your choice of room. As detailed above, higher floor...

The guesthouse was quite centrally located and very easy to find. One could walk to all the major sites conveniently. Around the guesthouse were many bars, cafes, and restaurants (although finding breakfast proved to be challenge on a Sunday morning). Due to its locating on a street full of bars and restaurants, the noise from the street might persist well into the night, which might be bad news for light sleepers.

The room and bathroom were basic but generally clean and spacious. We did not pay extra for the full breakfast but the food served was good (toast, fruits, yoghurt), and served by an enthusiastic staff. Service in the guesthouse was friendly, proactive, and helpful. When we were checking out, the staff even helped us get a cab that was far more economical than what we travelers would have gotten!

Friendly and comfortable are my two ways of describing Adelaides. As an older woman travelling alone, I can think of no better place to stay. My room was comfortable and supplied everything I need. The breakfast room and food provided are excellent. Above all, the staff are extremely friendly and always willing to take trouble in response to a request. I particularly appreciated the efforts made to respond to my Gluten Intolerance.

Staff are all exceptionally friendly and welcoming.
On expressing some disappointment at the first room allocated, the gentleman on reception went the 'second mile' to find a room to our satisfaction.
Breakfast was first class and served in a very friendly cheerful atmosphere.
Found the accommodation very plain and a bit 'tired' and, without a lift, challenging for less mobile guests.
