“Margaret Macdonald House stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

I am staying here for 1 week whilst working for the Commonwealth Games as a volunteer and its absolutely fine. You get what it says on the box. Its student accommodation that is used as a hostel during school break. The location is good, just 20 minutes walk for a 60 yr old man from Central Station and five minutes walk to a very buzzy and lively main street full of bars restaurants and shops. The nearest metro station is 5 mins walk and is two stops to the city centre. The area is very quiet and safe and you can be in Kelvingrove Park with a 10 minute stroll. The rooms are small, but perfectly functional and clean. Have been here 3 days and no sign of any cleaning service. En-suite is small, but they all are at universities. Plenty of hot water.
The kitchen area is large and well equipped with fridges, freezers and 3 cookers. The cookers are a tad slow to heat up but who cares.......just take an extra 5 minutes to do your cooking.
There is a sunny courtyard at the rear with a few bookable parking spaces and picnic benches.

For any parents wondering if its OK for their children to stay here, or for single people staying here then worry not. Each block is extremely secure with 2 locked doors before reaching the bedrooms.
Staff on reception are helpful and kind. Each room has its own wi-fi router and its excellent, 24/7, and free and secure.
I go back to my first comment. You get what you pay for. Its not the Ritz but if you want luxury go elsewhere. For a short stay in the city for whatever reason its fine, clean and safe. For the happy traveller on a budget I recommend it 100%

Room Tip: go for the rooms with en-suite. Students might like to share, but adults are a bit more discerning

Not the most modern or comfortable place I have stayed in. My room had a bad mouldy smell and the shower took some figuring out. Enough cupboard space though and the bed was ok, not great, but ok.

The kitchens where huge, but it was almost impossible to get the stoveplates to heat up.

As you can hear don't expect too much comfort. The price was reasonable though and the location not to bad. Near the railway station and also near the underground.

Town is walking distance.

Room Tip: Sorry no wisdom to share.

Good value for travelling.

The streets aren't good for go to the center because there are hardly street-climbs/reductions, anyway you can go on Gran Central Station in 10-15min of walk.

The room aren't cleany so much, there aren't any towels and hair-heaters, the hostel offers a Bathroom (optional), Bed, Table, Bedside Table and 6 UK power sources.

By the way for me was good, for 5 nights I spold just 124 pounds.

I have stayed here on four or five occasions when spending a long weekend in Glasgow. It's fair to day that the rooms have varied over the years in terms of cleanliness and general presentation - however, I have always found the student staff to be very helpful and obliging.

This year I noticed a distinct improvement in the rooms which we stayed in (plain student single, en-suite rooms) and, although very basic, they were very clean and tidy and generally looked a little more cared for.

The reason we come back year after year is that Margaret Macdonald house is very handy for the city centre, Cowcaddens subway stop (giving access to loads of museums, galleries & shops) and we generally spend so much time out and about exploring Glasgow that we do not miss the lack of televisions, fluffy towels...

If you're looking for basic, safe rooms in the city centre on a budget then I'd recommend checking them out.

Location and price sold me on this. It's just around the corner from the Glasgow School of Art, and is usually occupied by students from the school during term time. During the holidays they rent out rooms hostel-style. All I can say is, pity the students who have to stay here all the time. The building in general has that depressing institutional feel: pale green walls flecked with brown in the corridors, florescent tube lighting that hums and flickers on and off, and the only wall adornments being fire escape instructions and no smoking signs. The worst of it is the carpet, which is badly soiled and sticky throughout. In the bedroom the walls were marked from years of student posters being stuck up and taken down, and my bathroom did not appear to have been cleaned before I arrived. I had originally planned to self-cater during my week here, but the kitchen was so smelly and run down that I ended up eating out every night. Bearable if you're on a tight budget, but it just should be so much better.
