In what used to be the Royal Automobile club, the owners have transformed it into a high class hotel.
The staff are very helpful and pleasant; the bar atmospheric and comfortable.
My room was large, clean and extremely comfortable. The bathroom was huge with a seperate walk in shower (my only criticism is that the very large bath had no grab handles and for some one who is quite short, could be awkward getting in and out!).
i didn't have dinner there (went Brian's) but breakfast was great - you can even have a bloody mary shoukld the need arise!)

greta hotel - go find out for yourself.

What a treat! On arrival at Blythswood Square we were upgraded to the Presidential Suite - so our TripAdvisor report is probably biased!

It has a great location, high up in Glasgow on a lovely square, within walking distance of Queens Street Station, Sauchiehall Street, the Royal Concert Hall and most of the centre of town.

The hotel is in a splendid old building with beautifully trained and friendly staff. Being at the very top of the building, the Presidential Suite has magnificent views. In addition to a large bedroom with outstandingly comfortable bed, it has a sitting room, kitchen, large dining room / board room, and outside terrace. Everything is well thought through – for example electricity points are provided to fit continental plugs as well as British.

Especially impressive is the bathroom, with marble walls and floors, and a built-in sound system. There’s a huge Jacuzzi as well as walk-in shower. To say that the bathroom was generously provisioned would be an understatement… I counted 32 towels on offer, and enough soaps and shampoos to last a month (17 bottles).

We loved the Blythswood Square’s breakfast – delicious food beautifully and creatively presented, and very professional service.

We felt that this smart hotel achieves the difficult trick of delivering efficiency and style within the confines of a very traditional building. A classy place; we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The title says it all! Our ground floor room was hopelessly lit, with the little lighting provided from a few oversized fabric lampshades and one narrow window onto an internal courtyard being inadequate for casual reading, let alone doing serious work (strangely, the dark brown marble bathroom was better – though still not particularly brightly – lit). This was a real shame, as the room was furnished and finished to a high standard (with a sanded wooden floor, high quality furniture and attractive Harris Tweed fabrics), and would have been a pleasant space to occupy had it been lighter (as it was, it was a little depressing!). This clearly isn’t the case across the board, as family members occupied a room on the first floor which was brighter and benefited from ceiling spotlights (but was without a work desk) – but adequate lighting should not be a lottery.

The room was also marred by some shoddy design elements: a bathroom door which could not open fully because of the unnecessarily wide marble sink, and a sliding glass door to the toilet cubicle which smacked straight into the marble wall whenever it was closed. The overall standard of the accommodation just didn’t quite hit the standard this hotel is clearly aiming – and charging – for.

We had a similar experience of the service. Rarely warm or particularly sincere (with the exception of the bar manager in the Salon, who was a real professional), it just wasn’t that welcoming or friendly. Our request for an early check-in due to our arrival on a long overnight flight was dealt with coolly both in email correspondence in advance and at reception on our arrival; we got our room after a short wait, but a bit of empathy with weary travellers costs nothing and would have created a much better initial impression. Being served lukewarm tea at breakfast (which clearly hadn’t been brewed using boiling or even particularly hot water) also suggested a disappointing lack of care in the small details which can make a big difference.

There were several positives: the hotel is located in a quiet area but with easy access to the city centre and transport links, the bed was comfortable, there was a really good selection of free on-demand films and the attractive public areas were lovely (we particularly enjoyed having a hearty Scottish afternoon tea, complete with a cheese course, in the Salon on the first floor). They just weren’t enough to outweigh the underwhelming room and service.

I recently stayed at the Blythswood Square Hotel for business as well as a few days of pleasure. The hotel front desk is very efficient and provides great care as well as excellent restaurant recommendations (try the excellent Brian restaurant across the street for example). Room service is very efficient. The rooms are modern, comfortable, spacious and leave one needing nothing more. The spa is luxurious, fun and like a mini water park.

As for challenges, the restaurant staff try but are not properly trained, motivated or supervised. They need a seasoned manager to watch them and guide them. They are all very young and need that direction. Service is slow but the food that arrives is scrumptious and well presented as well as prepared. The breakfast buffet is only partly there before 8 am. Also before 8 am there is usually only 2 folk serving the entire restaurant floor (waitstaff).

If the hotel could fix the restaurant challenge to be competitive with say the Brian restaurant especially with service then I would raise the rating to very good and possibly excellent.

Would I stay here again for business? Yes. Would I stay here again for pleasure? Yes.

As part of our Silver wedding celebrations we decided to have afternoon tea at the Blythswood. Cakes, sandwiches etc were lovely presented but what made our afternoon special was the lovely waitress who attended to us. in conversation my husband mentioned we had been celebrating our anniversary and she must have relayed this information to someone in the kitchen as she returned with a slate of chocolates, tablet etc with 'Happy Silver Wedding' piped in white chocolate onto the slate. This was a lovely touch and really made our day. Thanks again to the Blythswood for going the exra mile.

Second trip to this very high standard hotel. Perfect room, restaurant and breakfast. Awesome cocktails and spa; will probably be back at Christmas.

Please do however sort out your lift; it really is the slowest and most annoying lift I've ever been in. A very minor criticism.
