“Lovely, friendly - a few amateurish edges but I'd still recommend it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2010

This is a good location up the hill from the town centre, just round the corner from the Glasgow School of Art, in a great building on a handsome Georgian square. The interior is fashionable without being intimidatingly cool; the room design used Scottish elements (like tweed) without being all tartan and tam-o-shanter. Really comfortable beds, a great night's sleep, decent breakfast (from a menu with some buffet) and lovely lovely staff. Good cocktail menu and a good buzz in the bar on both Friday and Saturday nights

A few things struck us as amateurish, possibly because I understand it has only recently opened: the staff were absolutely lovely but didn't seem very experienced, or else not with a hotel of this class. The concierge was useless, didn't even know about the Glasgow School of Art around the corner and was using google to find information. Perhaps more guests are interested in shopping than in culture, but surely some information on some of the art galleries? The room numbers don't necessarily correspond with the floor numbers, so 308 might not be on the 3rd floor. The TV in the room might need to be switched off and then on again to find a TV signal. Some of the signage looked like it had been printed out on A4 on the bubblejet printer in the office. Afternoon tea was served from an urn instead of freshly-boiled water. Tiny tiny irrelevant points which hardly bear mentioning, but added together made up a lovely hotel which I would totally recommend but just not quite on a par with a hotel of a similar class elsewhere.

Oh yes and the restaurant had a good atmosphere but the food was trying too hard to be fancy and fashionable and ended up looking great but tasting average.

We stayed here for four nights as part of our 25th Wedding Anniversary nine week holiday around the UK, Ireland, Scotland and the USA. We booked a classic double room on the celebration package which included champagne and chocolates on arrival.

Upon arrival we were upgraded for our wedding anniversary to Room 101 and upon arrival in our room the champagne and chocolates were there along with a lovely anniversary card from the hotel. Interesting was that on turn down that night they had not removed the used glasses and champagne bottle which we found strange.

The room was impressive when you walked in and I particularly loved the walk in robe with lots of coat hangers and storeage space and the huge bathroom with a wonderful free standing tub.

The bed was very comfortable and the pillows and doona were all fluffy and of good quality. The bathroom was large and had a good separate shower with a rainhead shower, the only negative was there was no holder for your soap etc in the shower, also not any room really to place your toiletries as limited vanity space, plenty of floor space though, and the floor was heated which was very nice.

The rooms were very modern and we had great views out over the road onto the park which was lovely. Overall the staff were very friendly, there was no internet or business centre, but the concerige would let you use his computer if you needed to do something.

We had friends over for drinks in the cocktail bar upstairs, the service was slow, the drinks expensive as you would expect, however, we did not expect to see buckets on the floor catching leaking water from the roof.

Breakfast was very pleasant and had a lovely buffet, but if you were not one of the first few down the tablecloths around the food got quite messy and it was not pleasant to look at as you selected your food. You also ordered your hot dishes from menu which was very nice, however, not a big selection and as we stayed for four nights by the fourth breakfast we had tired of the hot menu, so more selections may be required. The staff at breakfast were very good, greeting us by our names each morning and remembering how and when we liked our coffee and tea, a nice touch but as we seemed to be the only constant guests for more than one night could have made it easy to remember our names.

Parking is expensive 50GBP per day, luckily for us our friends neighbours let us park our hire car at their house and they collected us each day from the hotel. There is metered parking on the street but the parking police are very strict.

A few negatives: the timber flooring outside the door of our room was quite noisy when other guests were returning to their rooms late at night, also one morning room service was knocking on their door and calling out quite loudly constantly which woke us up.
Another negative was the hairdryers, didnt have a very good heat setting, need to get new ones with heat in them. Also the noise from the road was quite offputting, even on a Sunday the cars and horns and people walking by made it quite noisy, the windows were obviously not double glazed, I would strongly recommend a room at the back of the hotel.
It was quite a nice hotel but I would try the Hotel Du Vin next time and compare.

Experience was poor from the start. Arrived at check-in and the girl checking us in abandoned us halfway through to deal with another guest - we were left loitering. Not very welcoming at all and certainly not 5 star. I mentioned this to the girl who took over and she offered us some complimentary drinks as recompense. She then tried to take our order in the foyer - bizarre.

The foyer is nice until you reach the small and slow lift in the back corner that will take you to your room. Numbering of the rooms/floors is strange to say the least...minor point.

Arriving at our room - another mistake, made up as a twin, not a double. We were then moved, another trip down the uninspiring austere corridor with it's views of the workmen's portaloos.

Rooms are quite nice although finish is not up to scratch. For example, no towel rails, workmen had left stickers on the marble floor, dust around the place, wardrobe legs on blocks of off-cut wood. Very little table space to put anything down. Lighting is strange, very large light low over the bed. Some lightbulbs and switches not working. Shower pressure was variable. You have to move mirrors around between room and bathroom for doing hair (apparently...).

The door handle was loose on the outside so it took us an age to get it shut securely.

We went for some drinks in the bar. Nice room, slow service. Staff are enthusiastic but lack the finesse of a 5 star hotel. We were then charge for complimentary drinks which I had to point out, a little poor. Staff do not communicate in this place.

On returning later, we turned off the noisy air conditioning (placed right near the bed) and it was still making a noise. Complained, duty manager didn't really know what to do. Offered a room swap to another room, I asked him to go and check if the same problem was present there. He didn't, just called back with the room number. His other suggestion was providing ear plugs...5 star.

Curtains fit poorly and you get large beams of light right into your eyes when sleeping, this also bounces back off the strange sliding mirror. All in all not a good nights sleep.

Stayed here a couple of times with work and really enjoy it. It ia stillnall very new but the rooms are spot on with an excellent surround sound system where you can plug in your own iPod, and very nice design. Restaurant is good and the bar staff and food are A1. Central location tops it off. Used to stay at the Hilton but have changed due to this place. Gym and Spa open 1st September which will be great.

Stayed here with my husband last weekend. The hotel is fabulous, staff welcoming and professional and the rooms amazing. We were lucky enough to get upgraded on our arrival and had a beautiful room overlooking the square. The room had everything we could have needed, we hardly wanted to leave it, however when you do it is literally minutes from the shops and bars of the city centre. We finished our night with cocktails and whisky in the salon. We've stayed in lots of hotels in Glasgow and this is definitely our favourite - I can't wait for the spa to open! Highly highly recommended.

We stayed 2 nights, and everything was very good. Online booking flawless, reasonably good value, excellent location. Staff was very nice. Room was spotless. We had to think hard to find anything negative, and all we could come up with was the decor in the lobby with these red niches that reminded us of a house of ... well, never mind. We would stay there again and recommend it. Oh, that and it was hard to find, not a prominent sign visible from the street.

I really enjoyed this hotel. While booking was a challenge through the website for some reason, upon contacting the hotel directly, they were very friendly and helpful. I booked two nights (both with breakfast, one with dinner too). The room was a nice size and the bathroom was great, big tub, huge separate shower stall. The only (minor) glitch was that a couple of the bathroom products had been used previously. When I brought this to the staff's attention, they immediately fixed it and there were no other problems. Breakfast buffet was good (love all the breads and cheeses), you could also order off menu, although i didnt. You can pay for a newspaper to your room, but dont, because there were ample papers outside the restaurant at breakfast. The dinner I booked was really good, it was off a price fixe menu and i was hesitant as i didnt recognize the foods (or at least the way the foods were described) - however, it was delicious. Had an appetizer, tried a new fish and went with the servers recommended dessert - Really tasty. The front desk staff and the conceirge went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. I'd just been staying at a hotel that was about double the cost and some of the lack of details made that hotel less luxurious, this hotel was less price and definitely paid attention to details.
