“Rude owner ruined the experience!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2013

First of all when we rang to book, the owner was busy and told us to call back at a more convenient time for her. When we arrived there wasn't any kind of welcome. The owner was extremely rude and only interested in making money. The rooms are ok, but very basic. The owner was so awful, unhelpful and uninterested that it completely spoilt our stay. We would never stay here again and would highly recommend that others do not stay here. It is totally overpriced for such basic amenities. They even charge extra for the electricity!

I suppose Value for your money is all in the expectations you have. I found for the price charged the accommodations were very adequate.
This is the second time I have stayed at this place and found no odour of smoke or mould or mildew. The place to be clean and tidy although the furnishings were older and showed signs of use were functional and clean.
As to being on the flight path to Glasgow Airport this would apply to all of the accommodation in Milngavie and the flights are not operated between 11pm and 7am. and as we were out most days we really did not notice the flyovers during the Day.
Our first time there we had young children and used the washer and dishwasher and dried the clothes on the clothes line with no problems.
My second time at this accommodation was for a Golf trip with 3 other gentlemen who all agreed that this place was great value for the money and a great central location for golf as we were surrounded by Golf Courses.
The only negative thing I could say would be the shower facilities, the cottage we had this time had only a hand held shower head with no shower closet. This was a bit annoying but we all managed.
The cottage we had previously had a shower closet and it would be nice if they were all like that.
Would I rent again? I guess so as I am already making plans for an other golf trip with a total of 8 people this time so will have to rent 2 cottages and I want the one with the shower closet.

Excitement pulsed thru us as we left Glasgow Airport, heading north for our accomodations. After all, five of the eight people travelling in our entourage had never been to Scotland and here was a wonderful opportunity to take in the majestic mountains, lovely lochs and wonderful hospitality for twelve whole days! The appeal of Kilmardinny Estate Self Catering cottages was its location to Glasgow (central to all the various destinations we planned on visiting across the beautiful country), and that it came recommended to us by a travel agent. We paid for the visit in advance and had a list of amenities that seemed acceptable for the duration of our vacation.
Perhaps it was the rain that fell for 6 weeks prior to our arrival, perhaps it was poor management of the estate by whomever is responsible for its upkeep, perhaps it was that our expectations were higher than this modest property was capable of meeting... we were immediately disappointed. The driveway provided a secure location for the vehicles to be parked and was within a reasonable distance to the entrances of the cottages. And that is where my positive feedback for these accomodations cease, and I'm already feeling like I'm being generous. The odor emitting from the hedge near the parking lot was not pleasing and should have been our first clue to hop back in our vehicles and drive away. Walking into the cottages, the air was damp, the odour of cigarette smoke was overwhelming (considering it was posted and advertised as a non-smoking location), the carpeting had a mild odour of a recent pet's visit and mildew, and the bedding was damp. The laundry facilities that were mentioned on the list of amenities did not include a dryer, and sadly the clothesline located behind the next cottage beneath the trees with little sun was a poor substitute. And where were the clothespins? Being under the flight path for Glasgow Airport would have been fantastic if we were airplane enthusiasts, but I'm thinking even someone who loves the Wright Brothers would have been peeved by the regular intervals of noise overhead. Priming the toilet to get it to flush was a thing of interest. We understand these types of toilets are common in Scotland so I won't fault them for this, but note to self for next time: if it doesn't flush on the first pull, keep pulling and eventually... voila.
If payment hadn't been made ahead with zero chance of a refund, we would have not stayed. However! There we were for twelve days.
One of the party developed a bacterial chest infection which the emergency room doctor suggested was possibly due to the mold, mildew and damp air in the cottage. Others in our group developed coughs and sore throats as well.
We were all disappointed and none of us will be recommending these accomodations to anyone.

We had the unfortunate priviledge of staying here for 12 days in mid-September. Upon arrival, we walked through a beautiful well-groomed hedge which separated the carpark from the cottage area, and was assaulted by the smell of a dead or rotting animal (likely hidden beneath the hedge). Our welcome was abrupt... not the Scottish hospitality we were expecting. Directions to the grocery store were vague, and it was only through chance, that we managed to find it. We moved our stuff into the cottage, and found that everything felt cold and damp. It took us 2 days (with the heat as hot as we could stand it) to dry the place out. I guess in hindsight, the mildew along the bottom of the patio door and the rotten wood around the window frames should have been our first clue that this was going to be a 'less than stellar' accomodation.

The cottage seemed to be under the main flight-path for Glasgow Airport... which resulted in a certain amount of noise that we were unaccustomed to. We were travelling with 2 children (one baby and one toddler), and when we discovered that we had 4 twin beds, we ended up moving a mattress onto the floor (into the larger bedroom) for the kids. We also ended up going to the store and purchasing a couple of fleece blankets, since the heavy duvet's which were provided were completely inappropriate for 2 small children. After having an incident where one of the kids threw-up on a pillow, we took the pillowcase off (to wash both it and the pillow) to find that the pillow appeared to be stained with various shades of yellow and brown... completely repulsing, and thus ending our use of the pillows which were also provided. Another trip to the store for hypo-allergenic pillows!

We were also travelling with some extended family, who also had an adjacent cottage. For a place that claimed to be smoke-free, their cottage smelled like a smokers lounge!

The fridge leaked... we kept a towel at the base of it for the duration of our stay.

The television reception was limited to BBC 1 through 5, in varying degrees of fuzziness.

The washing machine shook the entire cottage when it ran... and did not have a dryer.
Our clothes drying facilities consisted of a broken drying rack that we could prop up in front of one of the heaters, and a clothesline (located next to a fence and in the shade for a good part of the day, and had 6 clothespins). We were able to get some extra clothespins from the main house. We also found a launderette in Bearsden, about 10 minutes from the cottage. Thank goodness that we could get free wireless access from the McDonald's up the road, because that was our only hope for getting decent directions.

Fortunately for us, we spent everyday out and about, seeing the sites and visiting with some of our extended family. Our best night of sleep came from a bed and breakfast near Fort William (which we found last-minute in the dark of night), which was comparable in price, and offered fantastic amenities!

Although the location was terrific, and the rooms were a nice size... it was difficult to get past the dampness that seemed to linger, the noise from the constant stream of planes coming into Glasgow, and our general disappointment in the overall quality of the place.
