“Half decent”
Reviewed 1 March 2014 via mobile

Visited this pub a couple of times for food over a weekend at a local cottage. Decent selection of food and alcohol but the food is expensive for pub grub!
Had the fish and chips the first visit, which was nice. The rest of the group were pleased with their menu options too.
The second visit I ordered a full Scottish breakfast for just under £12. No potato scones or black pudding with it though which was strange and the breakfast itself was disappointing for the price. My GF got a pizza which was ok but for around £12 didn't justify the price.
Service the on the first visit was good but wasn't great on the second visit.
Overall a decent wee pub with average food.

“Perfect meal after a walk”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

The wife and I spent a sunny Sunday in Balmaha planning a walk up Conic Hill. Arriving early enough we found ample parking at the National Park car park across from the Inn (it does fill quickly on nice days year round) and easily climbed Conic Hill. Decending we made a path straight to the Oak Tree Inn across the street.

The Inn is a small independent but well known location for the community and tourism trade (there is not much else in Balamaha but the Inn). Pub and restaurant are seperate and on nice days there are outdoor options as well. Staff are incredibly friendly and saw to our needs quickly. We sat down just after noon and it was near empty but by leaving a bit over an hour later the place was near full.

Menu was ordered and was not long to wait. I had their homemade pizza - quite nice though a bit more herbs would not be too bad but a lovely large pizza for a single sitting (ended up taking some home as could not finish it). My wife ordered the steak pie which she said was lovely - rich in flavour and the chef was kind to substitute the chips or potato with mashed potato, side veg was generous portion and no complaints at all.

Dessert is where the Oak Tree shines. Fresh baked chocolate chip cookie dought with ice cream and whip and Bananaoffee pie home made... both incredibly rich, good portions and worth the guilt after.

The prices are a bit on the high side (perhaps £2-3 more than you would expect), though not dear but remember this is a local family run business that stays open year round - it is not a big chain that can afford cheap food and cheaper staff nor is it a shabby run down place. For that I am happy to pay a bit more to ensure it thrives.

Well worth a stop if in Balmaha, either for a pint, a meal or a special occassion.

“An attraction itself on the banks of Loch Lomond”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

We loved our visit today to the Oak Tree for lunch. We live abroad and come back to Scotland every 3-4 years to stay with family and have enjoyed this pub every time. Love the refurbishments, the menu, the quality of the food and friendliness. For us though, it's the atmosphere with the fireplace, timber beams, paraphernalia hanging on the walls and all in a beautiful setting. Just love it and cannot speak highly enough of the Bar for a meal!

“Great Food”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

We ate here twice whilst staying in the area.

The menu is very varied, portion sizes are good and the prices are also reasonable. I especially enjoyed the salmon fishcakes!

“Great Food & Drink in Iconic Location”
Reviewed 14 December 2013

First off, don't be misled by the reference to Glasgow in the address of this pub for foodies and ale/whisky fans - it's actually in a small, beautiful village on the banks of Loch Lomond about half an hours drive from Glasgow.

Now on with the review.

I've been visiting the Loch Lomond area for over 20 years now and the Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha is such a gem I'm reluctant to review it for fear it will change or be packed out next time I'm in the area.

The pub features cask ales from the microbrewery onsite - all very good, especially the Confusion Ale I sampled on two visits recently (golden 5% complex tasting beer - excellent as is the Blonde and the Balmaha 70/- Ale).

The food menu features home smoked fish - the smoked salmon fish cakes are to die for as was the smoked haddock with cheese and chive sauce served on a bed of mashed potatoes - all in all excellent. Watch for the specials on the blackboard - often available as a starter or main course.

Very friendly service, warm welcome - and not to forget the slightly quirky décor that features a number of long case clocks - overall the interior feel is Bavarian or Austrian. It's also walker/cyclist friendly and only 100 metres from the West Highland Way.

Essentially, if you're in the Loch Lomond area and enjoy good food at reasonable prices then you can do no better than visit the Oak Tree Inn - they also have rooms available but I haven't tried these so can't comment.
