“Central, but not so Grand”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2014

Recently stayed at this hotel on a short leisure break. I had really been looking forward to our stay after having seen a feature on a TV programme and looking up the very interesting history of the hotel. The hotel is very central, we got the train into central station and didn't even need to step outside to access the hotel. It was very handy for the main shopping areas in Glasgow and the restaurant that we had booked a table at for dinner. First impressions were not brilliant as I did not find the reception to be very welcoming. For such a 'Grand' hotel, the reception is very minimal and I did not find the receptionist to be very friendly or welcoming. However, we were quickly checked in and made our way to our room, located on the 2nd floor. The room was spacious, modern and clean, with a fantastic power shower. We enjoyed a drink or two in the bar, Champagne Central and found the service to be good there with a great selection of cocktails and other drinks to choose from. We did not experience any noise from the train station or the street outside during the night, however we were disturbed by the constant noise from the radiator in our room and also from what sounded like a delivery in the middle of the night. Breakfast offered a wide range of items to choose from. However, although the breakfast room was not busy, we were seated right beside another couple, a little bit too close for comfort, which prevented us from relaxing over what was otherwise a nice breakfast.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The hotel is certainly facinating, however the modern rennovation is very minimal and not so 'grand' as it could be. I would like to see more of a reference to it's very glamourous past.

Thank you for your review of your recent expeirence at the Grand Central Hotel.

It was a pleasure to read that you enjoyed our proximity to the train station, and that you found our bedrooms to be modern spacious and clean. With regards to your comments regarding our reception area, we are due to begin a refurbishment of our reception shortly, with work being completed by June.

We hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future, so you might have the opportunity to see the changes that we will make.

Kind Regards

Initially excited about staying at the refurbished central train station hotel - this place is anything but Grand. We were given a room that faced a busy bus stop. When we asked to change our room we were advised by staff, who already appeared to have a very indifferent attitude to the needs of their guests, that the other rooms were above the station and we were 'most likely' to hear announcements all day. Well, we stuck with the bus stop room as I would call it, went out for a lovely dinner and drinks, only to find, at 12;30am (yes, past midnight) that we were just above the ballroom where a very loud ceildh was in session till at least 1am! After calling guest services to inquire about the noise (it felt like the ceildh was in our room), we were advised about the ceildh timings and were offered a complimentary glass of wine! i'm sorry but at that point i was looking to sleep. no proper apology was given and we just waited for the noise to die out.

The night sleep - awful! the bed was uncomfortable and the room too hot. now i've stayed in worse places but always known that i would get what i paid for. here - you get no where what you pay for. in fact i would not stay here again even if someone paid me to do so.

Don't gt me started about breakfast. Food that had been lying around for hours, the poorest ingredients AND awful service again. in fact it felt like we should be grateful that we were served at all.

The only nice thing i have to say about this stay was that the Champagne bar is lovely though understaffed. the best staff here, i think, were hired only for that part of teh hotel as they were very polite and professional.

Badly done 'Grand' Hotel Glasgow. very badly done.

by the way - we were meant to stay for two nights and have checked out after the first.

Stayed here one night. The location is great for shopping and eating out. The staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The room we had was excellent, nicely furnished, very comfortable and very clean. It was so quiet that you could hardly believe you were in the centre of a city. The food in the hotel was of a very high standard. No complaints at all and would definately go back. Thanks to everyone at the hotel for making our stay so good.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 408 which overlooked the glass roof of Central Station. The room was very comfy an...

This hotel is ideally placed for a city break. Adjacent to the train station and minutes walk from Buchanan street. The hotel has been refurbished to a high standard and the public spaces and bars feel quite opulent. Our room was clean, quiet and the perfect temperature. The staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. We were travelling with a 3-month baby and they immediately moved us to a room with a bath which was very helpful. Breakfast was definitely up there with the best - a very friendly chap welcomed us both mornings and the food was excellent.I definitely recommend that you give this place a try.

We stayed here a few years ago for one night as we were attending a function in the hotel. This time, we were attending an event in the city and decided to spoil ourselves again, even though we only live 15 miles away. Once again, we were not disappointed. The rooms are fresh, clean, comfortable and colourful, with our room this time on the 3rd floor looking right down Waterloo Street. Breakfast was excellent gain, although I have to say, tea and coffee service was slow. We stayed an extra nigh on the Sunday and used the time to visit local museums. No stay at the hotel is complete without a visit to the lovely Champagne Bar, which is rather expensive, but hey - why not spoil yourself now and again?

Stayed here for one night. The location is excellent. Close to shops and bars but not close enough for any noise to bother you. The hotel has recently been refurbished to a high standard. Our room was nice and clean. The main issue we had was the beds. They were so uncomfortable. All the springs could be felt through the mattress which made it a very sleepless night. Would stay here again due to location but only if the beds were replaced.

It was a delight to read that you enjoyed the convenience and cleanliness of our establishment, though I was sorry to hear that you did not enjoy our beds.

I understand a member of our team has been in contact to ascertain your room number to have the mattress replaced, with the hope that we can avoid any further discomfort for our guests.

This hotel is a great location for shopping, drinking and eating out.

The staff were friendly and the bar was great! However the hotel could do with a good scrub as it's a bit scruffy at the edges. Overall a nice hotel but not luxurious...
