Owner description: The Tenement House is a National Trust for Scotland property in Glasgow's City Centre. With 1982 original features it provides a rare glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early 20th century. The house, lived in by Miss Agnes Toward for over half a century is a unique opportunity to experience collections in their unchanged environment. See what it meant to be an 'independent woman' in the first half of the 20th century; experience how ordinary folk lived, and appreciate how many of the household amenities we now take for granted were considered luxuries less than a century ago. Authentic gas lighting has been installed to recreate the atmosphere of the house, which didn't have electric lighting until 1960. An exhibition on the ground floor makes the most of Miss Toward's extensive personal archive, providing a valuable time capsule for visitors today. Toilet facilities and a gift shop are available on the exhibition floor.
Useful Information: Baby buggy parking, Activities for young children

This National Trust owned property is tucked away in a back street but well worth finding if you are interested in urban history. It is preserved as it was early in the 20th century complete with gas lighting and has been filled with the furniture and effects of the period. A great example of an upper class tenement of the time.

So many things to see and to bring back memories. Don't know if children would be as delighted by it as would older adults.

Memories it really brought back and reminded me of my grandparent's home where she brought up six children. It was very nostalgic and I gave the curator some bits and bobs to add to their peep into the past

Having heard the tales of life in the early 1900 tenaments of my own family, this was a fasinatiing place to visit. It brought home both the hardships faced and the family spirit of those who lived in such propoerties in late 19th, early 20th century Scotland.
This property is well worth a visit to anyone who is interested in the way people lived in the late 19th or early 20th century during the Industrial revolution.
