This 'traditional scottish hotel' (Argyll Hotel 973 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow G3 7TQ) was full of surprises! I spent 3 nights in a well appointed en suite room (104) - which was clean & comfortable though the decoration was 'tired' and in need of refreshing. Do check if their Sutherlands Restaurant is OPEN when you want to go - I was disappointed that Tue-Thu 6-8th Dec 2011 it was NOT open due to low occupancy at that time. However this same restaurant is their basement breakfast room (there IS a lift available or you negotiate some 'interesting' stairs for access)

This restaurant/breakfast room is olde worlde - very dark brown (with slightly faded fabric chairs and dark brown tables (no cloths)) and a dark tartan carpet. With help yourself breakfast from huge olde worlde stainless steel servers and a heated plate rack (all must cost a small fortune to run).. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and anyone could sit anywhere (probably due to low occupancy) and every table had butter & milk already on it - and I suspect that some tables were not used - it may have been more cost effective etc for the Hotel if meals had been cooked to order and tables allocated - but, as a visitor it was an interesting observation.

Surprisingly I WOULD stay again if I was in the area - it was of average price for the area and very near the Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery (Free) which I spent some time at.

The reason for my trip was a family funeral - and, not knowing the area I had chosen this Hotel from the Tourist Information Board Accommodation Brochure.

Room Tip: There is a lift but choose ground floor if you have any mobility problems.

Stayed in Argyll for 2 nights, room was of a standard size,(they do bigger twins), clean bedding, clean but old-fashioned en-suite, grout could be cleaner. Enough space for two people, tea and coffee (shame only one biscuit each). Internal bed linen clean, however stains noted on matress protector and bed dressing. Pillows extremely unyieldy and hard. En-suite clean, fresh towels shower and hand gel dispensers on wall. Breakfast lovely, staff pleasant and helpful. Meal in restaurant lovely. All in all sounds bad, but was actually quite nice. Would go back.

Room Tip: Ask for hotel, when booking not guesthouse

Very comfortable and clean, very Scottish, excellent location near shopping and main attractions and Best Scottish breakfast in town. The Full Scottish - black pudding, tomatoes, eggs as you like, and more every morning. Excellent value, would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for corner unit, overlooking park - Room 3 in guest house

Stayed at the Argyll Hotel for 8 nights. The rooms are clean and well maintained with good tea / coffee making facilities and a free wi-fi. Bathrooms are spacious. The staff at the front desk, housekeeping are very helpful. Breakfasts are excellant and generous with the polite and courteous staff. Argyll is a safe place for stay and definite value for money. When I had to leave very early in the morning they made sure my trip was safe. Certainly would like to stay at the Argyll if I happen to visit Glasgow again!

Stayed here for one night as we had a function close by I had tried to book in for 2 nights but hotel was fully booked.

The room appeared to br under the stairs and was tiny.

The bathroom was dirty and when I had a shower the whole thing came off in my hand and on sunday morning the water was cold.

The carpet was sticky

I am glad we stayed somewhere else on the Friday night

We enjoyed staying here so much in August that we returned in October.

We stayed in the Argyll Guesthouse and had a large bedroom and good sized bathroom. The staff were very helpful and the breakfasts were easily the best we had during our three months of travelling. The breakfast waitress was superb....extremely warm and friendly.

Sutherlands restaurant wasn't open during our October stay which was disappointing as it had been a highlight of our August stay.

Highly recommended.

I spent close to two weeks at the Argyll this past Summer...thou not for two weeks straight. My primary reason was for a conference at the very close by U of Glasgow (opened my window to here the clock tower chimes/bells) but I added on some other business trip stuff outside of Glasgow.

The staff were very helpful and good-natured when this NA fisherman fell into the local creek and sullied the only pair of jeans he had brought (they were cleaned and pressed overnight). They patiently answered my many and sundry questions and offered advice on things busish and trainish. They happily (and safely) stored my luggage when I made several out of town overnight jaunts. They even smiled (maybe that was really a grimace) when I totally buggered the proper pronunciation of the road on which the hotel is located. Finally unlike the horrendous breakfasts offered as part of "the deal" by NA hotels and unfortunately an increasing number in GB and Europe that at the Argyll was always fresh and interesting and staff were ready to refill my coffee cup<<what's not to like.

Room Tip: Aim for the upper floors on the front street side, if you look you can see (and hear) the clock towe...
