“Extremely friendly and helpful hotel in classic Victorian villa”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

Very warm welcome in a interesting and beautiful building. The breakfast was exceptionally good and the service was first-class. Yes, the building could be a bit more swish and parking outside is an experience but this is a great value and far more fun than a corporate chain.

I had an excellent stay at this hotel. The staff is extremely friendly and helpfull and the building is so beautiful ( high celling, impressive moldings). I enjoyed being there. Thank you very much for this warm welcome.

like others I found the staff friendly, the breakfast just fine and the location good.

I'd stayed before but wasn't expecting the obvious decline in investment/care for what is a beautiful building. To coin a phrase, it felt as if it had been having the ar*e kicked out of it for a while, with a multitude of scuffed/tired fabric & fitments. The paintwork was in dire need of attention, and our room (15 on the top floor) was very good size but just so very unloved. Two lights both missing proper cords, a window in an appalling state, a disfunctional bathroom lock, a grubby tea tray container, lots of cracks just needing a little filler and paint to bring it back to happy life...lots of daft wee things which wouldn't take much to sort and which any good management would identify through occasional inspection. (and I'd suggest that cleaning staff be discouraged from hurling dirty soapy water all over the front steps at 9am, as people are checking out...such a bad impression it leaves!)

So, small things detracted from enjoyment of what otherwise might have been a better stay. Shame.

Thank you for comments. Firstly, we have recently took over the hotel in April and we are continuously making improvements and investing in the business. We do understand there are problems to be seen to. We have just finished refurbishment in the lounge and have started painting in the main communal areas. Room by room we hope to make a vast improvement over the next year. We hope you would come stay with us again to see further improvements.

Thank you,
Bal

I booked the hotel through lateroom.com for one night. I booked a twin room for me and my husband because it looked bigger and more roomy than the double room. When we arrived at the hotel we were told that we were booked in a single room. They weren't sure what had happened and although the booking was for 2 adults!! The guy on reception was very nice and apologic and said all their rooms were booked that day and if we can wait, he'll try and sort something out. Eventually after waiting for over half hour he said there was a double room free but needed to be cleaned and will only charge us for a double was less but asked us to wait further. As we were only there for one night we settled for that room but it was on the third floor and the hotel has no lift so that wasn't great as my husband suffers from high blood pressure and not in best of health and we had to carry our own luggage. As we were meeting our daughter and were going to watch her show at the theatre we decided to go out and didn't return until after 11pm. The room was small a bit outdated, very hot and the bed was uncomfortable. I was disappointed with this experience as it was my first time in Glasgow and really wanted to be in a nice hotel. The hotel itself was in a great location and enjoyed the botanical garden close by and I'm sure if we had the room we booked it would have made our stay even better!

Room Tip: Probably best to double check that you have the room you requested day before you travel. Third flo...

My husband stayed here the first week in September 2012 while he was attending a conference at The University of Glasgow. The location in the west end was great but the hotel left a lot to be desired. First of all there is no air conditioning. Even in early September we had some warm nights and it was uncomfortable. Especially so since the only cover was a thick duvet. We were in a room on the 3rd floor and the lobby and our room was quite old and worn. The carpets were the worst. The carpet in our room was dirty, worn and sticky feeling -uggghh. The bathroom was very uncomfortable. To get in the tiny shower you have to turn sideways and wedge yourself between the shower and the sink. My husband and I are average height and size and neither of us could move in the shower without hitting the sides of the shower. There is no room to open a shower door so a shower curtain that touches you the entire time you shower is in place. The breakfast selection was minimal and if you order a hot breakfast it takes ages coming. The wireless Internet that was advertised could only be accessed in the lobby. All in all definitely not worth the money.

Room Tip: Definitely don't let them give you the basement or attic rooms

My wife and I stayed at the Belhaven for one night while we were taking our son through to the Glasgow University, Queen Margaret Residences, and it's really handy for there.
The staff in the hotel are great, service was good, the bar prices not bad at all and the breakfast was fantastic!
We had a room on the ground floor, just behind the lounge, with two double beds! OK, it's not ultra-modern...however, it was clean, comfortable and everything worked fine. It's in a quiet street, though access to the road outside the hotel is down a very narrow lane. We managed to park right outside and the road is quiet and safe.
It's a nice area, Byres road and all the restaurants and bars is just a five minute walk away and you could hop on a bus to get into the city centre in about 10 - 15 minutes.
In short, we enjoyed our stay and were made to feel very welcome. We'd be quite happy to goback.

This was a return visit to the hotel for me.This time i was travelling alone so i was dissappointed in my room which was at the top of a very steep and windy staircase.Having previously stayed in a well appointed modern room this room was a little tired, in that ,the decor was old and the room quite small as it was in an attic. The sash window was broken so unable to stay open without jamming something in it.However the staff were extremely pleasant, the cleaners kept the room immaculate during my three night stay. The breakfast was absolutely beautifully presented and substantial.Overall, my initial dissappointment in the actual room itself was somewhat diminished by the service i received and i will return again although i would definitely ask for another room other than Room 18!
