“Nice hotel, reasonable value, central, expensive but brilliant restaurant”
Reviewed 1 November 2010

This was Glagow's former Dept of Education and it still bears the marks of municipality. Its a fun building, with some interesting details, like the hand made white tiles on the walls and the wonderful old lift. The staff are friendly and comptetent and Abode is well placed. It's rooms are reasonably priced for the location, they have been well converted and imaginatively done. But sme are begint o fray a little round the edges and I would avoid Rooms 113 and 114 as the kitchen fans are right outside the windows which look onto a dull interior space.
The ground floor restaurant is amazing and although its pricy for Glasgow, its worth every penny. The food was some of the best I've had this year and deserves to be savoured. Its also nicely done, the service was knowledgeable and cheerful without being overbearing or self conscious, and even better, there was no muzak at all, YEAH! . If you want something cheaper and noisier then theres another restaurant in the basement which serves reasonable food. Have fun

Could well have done without music blaring in the breakfast area. When I asked for this to be turned down the member of staff said words to the effect that: "I'm not sure if I can actually do that". Absolutely daft and completely brainless; typically "British" 'don't really give a damn' attitiude to a customer's reasonable request

Otherwise, the hotel is in a great location, with the proximity of parking a big bonus. Staff were, on the whole fairly, although not outstandingly, friendly, and courteous; the most courteous being a French lady who served our breakfast. No criticisms of Scottish hopsitality; Glasgow is generally a very friendly city, and I myself am a Scot. Service in many hotels and shops etc in (prosperous") West Kent where we live is appalling "servioce"-wise, with surly staff, and a disinterested attitude. Glasgow is also a great city anyway, and home to some fantastic buidlings, museums and restaurants etc. It should market itself better "down south", with many people (sassenachs mainly) in the south of England far more aware of Edinburgh's attractions.

Room itself was fine, although we would have expected something a bit more "special" for the price we paid, this was, after all, a "mid-priced" room. Cleaning and housekeeping staff very friendly. I am a business journalist, and have stayed in hotels in many parts of Europe; overall I would say that I would stay again, but certainly did not feel the hotel had any special or particualrly endearing characteristics; apart form being in a lovely buidling and at the heart of a great city. Could you also ask Glasgow City Council to do something about all the one-way streets close to the hotel?!

My partner and i chose to stay here based on the reviews we'd read about this place. However, we found the staff to be extremely rude and very unhelpful. The room was extremely cramped....i've stayed in more spacious rooms at 3 star hotels! and this felt worse. the bathroom was just as bad - extremely cramped and quite tacky looking to be honest. we ordered food to the room and were told we had to pay there and then even though we had credit on on account!! and as neither my partner nor I had cash on us, we then got told to go downstairs to pay by card or we couldnt have the food! completely defeats the puropse of getting 'room service'! on top of that the air con didnt work! and when we queried about that...the receptionist simply told us to open our windows instead!! extremely unhelpful staff, and very disgusted at their service. they did eventually transfer us to another room, but we didnt even get an apology for the inconvenience they'd caused us. we thought we could atleast have a nice peaceful breakfast before we leave, but during breakfast we got given butter which was mouldy, and the supervisor started shouting at her staff about this infront of everyone in the restaruant! very unprofessional to say the least! and to make matters worse, they double charged us!!!! extremely unhappy with their service. would not recommend this hotel to any of my friends. i did put in a complaint and they did refund the full amount they charged us, plus have asked us to come back for a free stay. but they really spoiled an extrtremely special night for us, and it's certainly somewehre I would never go back, even if it is for free.

We booked the "our shout" promotion. It was wonderful value; we had a lovely room - very comfortable, luxury toiletries, fluffy bedding, coffee and tea etc. Dinner was delicious and included a bottle of very decent wine. The next morning we had a wide choice of breakfast.
Staff were very helpful and friendly and the building itself is spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. Location is convenient for everything in the city centre. Would definitely recommend this hotel and we would stay there again.

The service provided was first class, all staff were welcoming, extremely helpful and friendly. The room was spotlessly clean, light and contemporary, a generous size with all expected facilities. The hotel was one street behind Sauchiehall Street which was extremely central to pubs and clubs, shops and cinema. The hotel was really quaint and had a retro feel to it. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. The only negative I could say is that the pillows were the continential type and were not very comfortable but I have since been informed that they have the normal ones also.

We were a bit disappointed to be honest. We had booked in at the hotel across the road, but they had double booked and so fixed us up with a room at the Abode. The room was very small, and the bathroom miniscule, however the bed was very comfy with lovely soft pillows. We had water coming through the bathroom ceiling, which was dealt with fairly quickly but wasn't nice. The net curtain at the window didn't shut properly so we felt we were being looked at by the people in the gym directly opposite. Breakfast was very nice, though the waitress got the order wrong first time round. I expected more from a 4* hotel to be honest.

Had a pleasant stay and a lovely comfy bed at Abode. Slept well and had no problem with noise despite several bars nearby hotel. Room we had was big although standard ones a little small. Didn't really like the mood lighting as no bright central light- only mention it as might be a problem if working in the room. Pleasant helpful staff provided a city map and bus details.
Hotel has the bonus of two places to eat. We chose the grill one night- food was lovely and reasonable (set menu from £10 for two courses) and more of a buzz about it than most hotel offerings felt like an evening out without having to leave the hotel. Room was not best I have ever stayed in but nice and everything worked and I slept well. The interior of hotel was really striking, they have kept some old features which gives it more character than a standard hotel.
Would suggest more info and a small table in room and less heating I found the central areas very warm for some reason but room had aircon.
