Owner description: Inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1888, Glasgow City Chambers dominates George Square and is currently home to Glasgow City Council. The grand marble staircase and banqueting hall are among the building's many highlights. Free guided tours are conducted at 10:30am and 2:30pm on weekdays except public holidays and special events.

“Best kept secret?”
Reviewed 6 October 2006

This is one of the most impressive public buildings in the UK. From the elegant entrance hall and on to the magnificent marble staircases leading onto beautiful rooms with ornate ceilings and hardwood panelling. The dignified Council Chamber is panelled in Spanish hardwood.

The Banqueting Hall is very special and the reception rooms are an equally high standard.

The free guided tour, at 1030 and 1430, lasts about 1 hour and was most informative, covering the history of the city to present day issues.

The City Chambers tour receives little publicity and only three other people were in the group with me. I can strongly recommend this tour. It is suitable for young people as well as adults.
