Attraction details
Owner description: Masterfully designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Holmwood is a family home with grand imagination behind it. Cupolas, columns and floor-to-ceiling windows exude elegance, while the bold opulent decoration echoes the colours found in ancient Greek temples. 2017 is Thomson's bicentennial year. The property is celebrating this through a year long special events programme, check the NTS website for details. Recent recreation of the magnificent original stencil decorative scheme in the Dining room allows appreciation of the intended vision of Thomson and on going work to continue the recreation will be progressing throughout 2017.

“Stay at the gatehouse”
Reviewed 17 February 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the gatehouse for 3 nights through Scottish National Trust holidays. It felt like home from home with nice cozy furnishings, very warm a well equipped kitchen.

It represented excellent value for money and blissfully peaceful.

We arrived to find the property warm and light, the caretaker lives on site in the main house and was on hand when we needed him.

The property was nice and clean, with lots of towels and good bedding. Lots of squirrels, rabbits and foxes in the gardens.

“Holmwood house is a work in progress, but the coach house is a gem”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

We stayed at the coach house of holmwood house.
Holmwood isn't very old and is still under renovation/restoration
If you go you really need to speak to one of the guides as they have a lot of information - why the house is in it's present state, the reason for the decor, how it was transformed and rebuilt and what they have done in the last little bit. You'll get a better appreciation for the time it takes to restore a property when you realize how long it takes to peel paint without destroying what is underneath!
The coach house you can rent through the national trust. We stayed for a week and it's a great place to stay. It's not a palace and if you don't like stairs you might not like it, but there is a double bed and three singles, a kitchen, dining and living room. One full bath and one toilet room. Laundry facilities. The pipes make a few odd sounds, but apart from that you feel like you are in the country. The train is down the bottom of the hill - also a fish and chips shop - if you walk the other way you have a main street with butcher, baker and grocery stores.

“Small but beautiful”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

A very worthwhile visit, a lovely house with some very special touches of history. What made the visit special was the most friendliest staff we have ever come across at a NTS property. They were all so enthusiastic, it was a joy to listen to them.

“Would recommend a visit”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

Holmwood is a peaceful haven we hadn't expected to find so close to the traffic and bizz on the outskirts of Glasgow. The house itself is beautifully designed and staff have done a brilliant job so far in revealing sections of hand-painted stenciling on some walls. The Minton flooring is gorgeous. We were shown round by David; a very informative, interesting and enthusiastic volunteer guide. The tearoom could do with some improvement in terms of food choices and decor more in keeping with the house, but overall Holmwood was well worth a visit.

“A beautiful place tucked away at the bottom of Linn Park”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

This is a truly beautiful building with a special atmosphere and a dedicated bunch of people working away to bring it back to it's full glory.

There's lovely grounds outside and a nice tea room inside - there's also a separate house that you can hire for the weekend and a well run fruit and vegetable garden

There's good parking and you are only 10 mins walk from Linn Park so you can make it a full day out.

Look out for the regular events at Easter, Summer, Halloween and Christmas too.

We liked the place so much that we got married there and Cath and Jim couldn't have done more to make sure out big day went perfectly.
