“A hidden gem!”
Review of Holmwood House

Attraction details
Owner description: Masterfully designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Holmwood is a family home with grand imagination behind it. Cupolas, columns and floor-to-ceiling windows exude elegance, while the bold opulent decoration echoes the colours found in ancient Greek temples. 2017 is Thomson's bicentennial year. The property is celebrating this through a year long special events programme, check the NTS website for details. Recent recreation of the magnificent original stencil decorative scheme in the Dining room allows appreciation of the intended vision of Thomson and on going work to continue the recreation will be progressing throughout 2017.

“A hidden gem!”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Holmwood house is truly a hidden gem ...... perhaps better signage would help. My visit was wonderful and the staff really charming. They were well informed on the history and architure and took time to guide us around and point out the wall decoration and interresting pieces of furniture. I particually appreciated the original detail that has been left on the walls and its painstaking restoration.
The coffee was exceptionally good. All in all a great day to spend a 'drieg' Glasgow afternoon.

“drive on”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

beautiful property shame about the staff. As one of Glasgows hidden gems for architecture and location , our visit was spoiled by rude arrogant and disinterested staff who made us feel unwelcome . Shame on you National Trust. I can only suggest that if the current staff don't like their current employment and find paying, visiting members of the general public such a pain, then they should seriously consider a change of occupation

It has been several years since I last visited this property and there has been some remarkable progress the bedroom has now been restored complete with four poster bed and one room has now had the star ceiling restored with a host of golden stars above you very impressive the guides mostly volunteers are most helpful. It is set in a tranquil part of the south side of Glasgow and it is most refreshing to stand outside and listen to the bird song, it has also a simple café and the madeira cake is highly recommended. Please remember this is very much an on going work so some aspects such as bare walls have to be tolerated but is still well worth a visit. Members of the National Trust have free admission

“A hidden gem with lots of history”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

Holmwood House is a building that I'd passed near to for many years without knowing of it's existence - it's a hidden gem of Scottish history that MUST be visited. the décor is mostly original and rare to see intact, and like many other such buildings Holmwood House could do with financial support to bring all it's wonder back to life - a beautiful building in a fantastic setting.

“Stay at the gatehouse”
Reviewed 17 February 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the gatehouse for 3 nights through Scottish National Trust holidays. It felt like home from home with nice cozy furnishings, very warm a well equipped kitchen.

It represented excellent value for money and blissfully peaceful.

We arrived to find the property warm and light, the caretaker lives on site in the main house and was on hand when we needed him.

The property was nice and clean, with lots of towels and good bedding. Lots of squirrels, rabbits and foxes in the gardens.
