Owner description: The Necropolis, Glasgow's Victorian City of the Dead, is a vast and grand cemetery modeled on Père-Lachaise in Paris. Described as one of the most significant cemeteries in Europe, it is a major visitor attraction and patrolled by Park Rangers. Heritage Trail maps are available to guide the visitor to the memorials and tombs of some of Glasgow's most eminent citizens.

Very similar to Pere Lachaise in Paris (of course it was modelled on it), vast cemetery, very impressive to visit. Well worth a look around, although not sure about taking photos- like some were doing!

Amazing to read some of the dates on the headstones and you also get an amazing view of the cathedral and city from the top.

After a hot day in Glasgow whilst visiting the games, this was a beautifully quiet and peaceful way to absorb some history and take in the superb views of the city.
Stop for a while for a rest, look out over the city and imagine how,why and when did the people of Glasgow and surrounding towns and villages manage to bury their dead here and erect such enormous monuments.
Outstanding place.

After visiting Glasgow Cathedral we looked around the Necropolis. Winding it's way up a hill are the tombs and graves of the City's great and good from back when Glasgow was the second city of the empire. I've never seen a graveyard like it, interesting and atmospheric with good views of the city below.
