“Stark Room”
Reviewed 10 September 2013

I stay here whenever in Glasgow and through its various brands have always been inpressed. This time not so - simply becasue the room I have been given is soul less, it is an adapted room for wheelchair use and is simply stark and bland. Usual refinements of Mac computer, fast wifi, excellent staff and a great gym have made up to it but avoid the rather depressing room 426 if you can Excellent location for the City and the SSEC and surrounding area and attractions.

I stay at the HGI Glasgow on a regular basis for business and the overall experience is very good. The on site parking and room facilities are very good such as Imac and internet access. The only negative I have found has been the breakfast that has not been very good.

As far as Hilton brand hotels go, this is one of the nicer ones. Located well within walking distance of the city (about 15 min), it's a great place to see the area from. You can walk along the Clyde river from the hotel to town and the hop-on-hop-off bus stops right out front. The hotel food was good, service was great, and every staff member I encountered was both friendly and helpful. I'd gladly stay here again.

We stayed here for the night of my birthday, post afternoon tea, evening meal and theatre. We arrived at reception at 12 on the off-chance the room woud be available, it was. I had requested a high floor, quiet location with a river view and got just that, top floor 2nd last room with an amazing view of STV BBC and the Squinty Bridge!
The room was very well presented with lots of pale wood and pale green prints, I loved the Apple TV/iMac, we have one at home so there was no hesitation in using it. When we returned from the theatre we were surprised that due to local licensing laws we weren't able to have a glass of wine on the deck outside so had to keep popping out so DH could have a smoke.
Loved the bed and bedding, very comfortable. Although breakfast still had an hour to run we felt the available selection had been poked and prodded a bit too much. You can, if you wish, request made to order breakfast but as we were a tad tight on time chose not to. We perhaps caught them on an off day as lots of other reviewers enthuse about the breakfast selection, this would not prevent us from returning or recommending it to others.

Room Tip: River view-High floor- Quiet room

Dear Mairn138

Thank you for your review.

Glasgow City Council policy of not allowing drink outdoors after 10pm is very frustrating for us however as long as it is in place we must adhere to it.

Breakfast should be the same standard from the first to the last guest and I will be sharing your feedback with the team.

Kind Regards
Brian

This is a hotel that overlooks the River Clyde - well half the rooms do, with the other half overlooking the road. Being a Hilton Honours Silver Member, I thought it would be straight-forward to be allocated a room with a river view. Well, it wasn't! When e-mailing and calling in advance to request this, I was told there was a £20 supplement for a river view. I advised that I did not think most people would pay that and I would arrive early on the day to try to be allocated a river view. Duly did this, 30 minutes before the check-in time. This time I was asked to pay £10 per night for a river view. I declined this offer and given that the vast majority were not paying the supplement, I would like a river view room at no extra cost. I was then told that I could have one but only on a lower floor i.e. not 3rd, 4th or 5th, so we accepted a room on the 2nd floor. Needless to say, our friends staying at the Hotel who are not Hilton Honours members got allocated a 4th floor river view with no supplement! Sorry, Hilton - it's little niggles like this where you let yourself down.
We were booked for dinner on the first night of our stay. However, there was a private function on in the main restaurant - I don't think this is fair. A hotel should keep its restaurant for its guests - appreciate there will be others who eat there too, but not taking over the entire restaurant! We got served our dinner in one of the Hotel's meeting rooms - not the same ambience at all, very pleasant service, if a little slow. However, no reduction was offered - I think a token 10% reduction would have been good, given the circumstances.
Our shower went from very hot to scalding. On the first morning, we advised Reception and asked for this to be repaired while we were out all day. Had a card left in our room from Maintenance to say it had been repaired, so assumed all well. Came back from dinner elsewhere at 11.30pm - shower had been attended to, but now it went from cold to merely tepid. The duty Receptionist moved us to another room - this time a room on the top floor! No reduction offered for the inconvenience. We didn't ask for one, but it would have been nice to have been offered this.
No porters in evidence - sorry not a 4 star hotel without this!
Good points: friendly staff; good beds and bedding; apple mac pc/tv; clean throughout.
Overall, I think this is a 3.5 star hotel and experience.

Dear Andrew40

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion.

Our river-view rooms are our most popular rooms and HHonors Gold and Diamond members are upgraded with no supplement.

As a 4 star hotel we have porterage available on request.

Kind Regards,
Brian

A very friendly, comfortable hotel. Great room, shower and in room entertainment system too. The gym was a little lacking in machines, but overall an excellent hotel and very well situated almost in the centre of Glasgow. Good staff at reception, and breakfast service too.

I assume that the Hilton Garden Inn has been built with the upcoming Commonwealth Games in mind and is ideally situated opposite the new velodrome. It has exceptionally good, reasonably priced and secure parking (surprising how much this can cost with some hotels) - here £5 per day.
The usual style is applied to the hotel - this brand seems to be able to avoid the 'bed factory' feel of a Premier Inn, whilst being similar in price. Overall, good food (excellent breakfast), pleasant intelligent staff and an accessible venue.

Room Tip: Facing the river is good.
