Not sure who's responsible for determining star ratings for hotels, but we picked this one based on the strength of the TripAdvisor reviews and the fact that it was a good value for a four-star accommodation. Well, having just come from London and having stayed at a good number of other hotels, I can say this one was unlike any other four-star I've ever encountered. It simply doesn't have the amenities or ambiance one would expect, and I'm seeing a lot of scuffed walls and common areas that haven't been painted in too long.

The hotel has a tiny fitness room or a subscription to a real gym three blocks away. There is no pool. There are no ice machines for public use, and one must go to the hotel bar to request ice. (Obviously there's no ice when the bar is closed.)

More of the bad: This hotel is in the middle of nowhere (unless you're seeing a show at the SECC), and getting to it from the airport or central Glasgow using public transport is simple but not intuitive. We decided to walk to the hotel when we arrived by train to Glasgow Central. It took at least a half hour, and we went through some pretty bombed-out industrial-looking areas on the way.

Only two elevators, which are tiny but must serve the whole place and smelled heavily of fish and chips on more than one occasion. The lobby is tiny and can also be crowded, with harsh lighting and an atmosphere that suggests more of a youth hostel than a luxury hotel. No bathtubs in the rooms. The advertised on-demand printing service is actually a single inkjet printer behind the front desk, and it didn't work.

The good: Macs and free wireless in every room, though the Mac also acts as your TV and takes a little while to figure out. The subway is about three blocks away and will take you downtown in a hurry for £1.20 or to the airport for £2.75, something I think the hotel (via website and via staff) should publicize more. The rooms are clean and tidy, and make good use of small space through clever storage. Good value. Staff seemed helpful, and I give the manager great credit for responding to prior negative reviews. We didn't try the food.

All in all, I would recommend the place for some customers. But if you're used to being close to the action and being pampered a bit (as in a typical four-star establishment), I would look elsewhere.

The City Inn was a fantastic place to stay. The morning breakfast was excellent and offered nice variety. I thought the rooms were fantastic- large imac screens with free internet and cable TV. The tea service and selection was lovely and I really enjoyed the view of the river. I highly recommend this hotel if you are attending a conference at SECC. The location is not ideal for walking through downtown- but it can be done. I will definitely be back here!

We used this venue to hold our baby boy's Christening reception. All the staff were extremely attentive and the food was excellent. The restaurant looks over the River Clyde and has a great outside Terrace area with shelter and patio heaters. We then spent the rest of the evening in the bar (kids off for a sleepover at grandparents) having a few drinks with friends and food from the bar menu - this was served quickly and tasted lovely. To finish the day, we stayed overnight. The room was clean, comfortable and had fantastic views across the Clyde. The room and the bathroom were not the biggest I have been in but more that met our needs.

Breakfast the next day did not disappoint, the only negative is that last orders were 9.30am because the hotel is mainly used for business during the week. However check out was 12pm which meant you could enjoy the morning without feeling rushed.

Would definitely recommend to friends and would visit again.

A nice, comfortable hotel that is clean and modern with very friendly staff. A nice size room and all the things you would need from a business hotel. The bathroom is pretty small, but it's clean, and the shower is very good.

A great place to stay if you're on business - the reliable (and strong) free wifi and the iMac that doubles as a TV is quite useful. The only problem is that it is a bit out of the way, but you do get a river view and if you want to be near the conference centre it's perfect.
