“Great service and location”
Reviewed 26 August 2012

I use this hotel frequently for business trips. The location is fantastic for getting into and out of Glasgow. The restaurant is reasonably good. The rooms are a bit tired, and could do with some upgrading. Some rooms are huge and airy, the standard rooms are a bit smaller and feel a bit stuffy - could do with some modernisation. Once I got some cooler air in, I had a very restful sleep. Good breakfast. The single item that always stands out is that every single member of staff in every part of the hotel is extremely friendly and approachable, and that's why I keep going back!

Room Tip: Rooms facing George Square can be noisy. Some of the more expensive rooms are huge!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in August. It is a large hotel overlooking George Square. It was formerly a British Rail hotel - the North British. We had booked because it was in the city centre and their club room seemed to offer everything we wanted at a reasonable price.

The room we were given was at the front of the hotel overlooking the square and was very noisy. The room was very large but appeared to be quite shabby, the carpet was stained and wrinkled in places and the room contained an ill assortment of furniture, oddly placed. There was no bedside table on my wife's side of the bed; a desk had been placed there instead. Another small table at one end of the room between two armchairs had the coffee/tea making supplies on it. Unfortunately, there was no socket for the kettle nearby and it was necessary to move the kettle around the room to find a socket, either on the floor or the desk.

Initially it appeared that all the bulbs had gone in the lights but after swapping them about realised that they were all linked to a central switch. The side lamp when moved to the desk and plugged in worked independently.

Two safes were provided but both were too small to hold our laptops and cameras. Initially we could not access to the free internet but a call to reception and a brief conversation with a very knowledgeable IT person solved the difficulties and we had no further problems. The connection gave 512kB down and 225 upload speeds - more than adequate

The bathroom was long and narrow and quite old fashioned fitted with a bath/shower with a curtain. There was a huge damp patch on the ceiling. There was no extractor fan and the window, which had been missed on the last refurbishment, did not open.

The housekeeping left a lot to be desired - our toothmugs/glasses and toothbrushes were not lifted and wiped down underneath, and although we were supplied with the usual bathroom toiletries, they were never replenished. We eeked out the shower gel and shared the single bar of soap between the sink and bath.

We had booked a Club room with double bed. With the club room you are entitled to complimentary wine, beer and snacks in the Club Lounge between 5pm and 7pm. We did have a glass of wine there one evening. There was a limited choice and it was served by a member of staff. We were the only people there, and the large TV was permanently on which we turned down.

The breakfast buffet selection was quite poor and the hot buffet not very hot. The cold buffet was disappointing. The staff were very good at replenishing the food though. A seat in the conservatory gave a fine view out onto the square.

On our last evening my wife had a bath in tepid water and I had a tepid shower. The towel rail was also quite cool. When we told reception we were told it was probably the dial on the shower which it was not. She also said that no one else had complained. It was 7pm and we were going out to dinner. We were told that we either had to wait in our room or have the maintenance man check our taps or else he was available after 8.30 the next morning. We saw no reason for him to enter our room. We left it at that and when we returned a few hours later the water and the rail were hot!!

On the positive side, as I had to check out and leave early on our last morning the hotel did allow my wife use of the room until 1pm. After that there was a charge.

In all it was not a good experience and we won't be staying there again.

Went for our Silver wedding anniversary for 2 nights. Club room was very shabby and room was stifling hot, couldn't open windows -left with a fan which just circulated the hot air! Staff were pleasant but couldn't move us until next day. New room cooler but still shabby. Staff excellent -pity about the Hotel. Spoiled a Special Occasion for us.

Room Tip: Don't think there is one!

From the moment we arrived to the minute we left the staff were excellent; helpful and pleasant, nothing seemed to faze them. The food was really good - had dinner in the hotel the first night and it was very tasty; a hearty scottish breakfast with the opportunity to order food that wasn't on the breakfast buffet, eggs benedict to die for!
The bedroom was huge and looked out onto St George's square, enormous very, very comfortable bed with a memory mattress! The bathroom was big and airy with a bath and very effective shower overhead. Everything was clean but with fading grandeur, nothing a bit of refurbishment wouldn't cure. A flat screen tv and 2 armchairs, together with everything else ensured a very comfortable stay.
Would we return - most certainly!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel seem larger

Took my mum away for an overnight trip to do some girlie shopping, staff very helpful and friendly. Hotel bedroom was roasting hot, luckly we were open some windows but where our room was there was very little wind able to come through the windows. Room was fine for the price i paid but could do with upgrading. For example in bathroom there were round holes out of the plasterboard which had a wooden cover and painted white. Very nice breakfast and very central, Would go back, just needs a little lick of paint in and outside.

I actually feel sorry for the excellent staff in this hotel as they are doing their best to keep things running smoothly. The hotel could be nice if a lot of money was spent by the owners on refurbishment. The carpets are filthy, the furniture looks like something from the 1960's, there was a distinct smell of damp in the bathroom of our room and various damp patches on the ceiling and we found that the air conditioning in our room was virtually non-existent on what was one of the warmest weekends of the year. We actually had to keep the windows open all night to try and circulate cool air throughout the room and were constantly wakened by the noise of the traffic etc on both nights.

It's advertised as a 4 star hotel and we were paying over £200 per night for the room and breakfast but it most certainly wouldn't rate as a 4 star in my opinion.

Very disappointed with our room and probably won't stay here again when we next visit Glasgow.
