Another restaurant on our list of places to eat, we were advised to book as getting a table on demand can often be impossible at night. Located in the old Pier retail shop on the corner on Nelson Mandela Place and Buchanan Street, the 3 storey structure itself is impressive as well as being a listed building. The Grand staircase sweeping up from the two ground floor bars to the main restaurant is as impressive an entrance as you could wish for and opens onto the main dining area, which is capacious. The double height ceilings add to the grandeur of your first impression and with diners seated at two different levels, it doesn't look cramped.
We chose the Thai banquet which at £38 per person was probably the top end of what we would expect to pay, without drinks. The food was good, but catering as they were for diners in their hundreds, and coupled with long waits between courses, it lacked the finesse and sparkle that would have made this an impressive and memorable meal. We have eaten Thai food in Glasgow, every bit as good if not better for far less per person than was being asked here, albeit without the grandeur. All of this however, was tinged with the most ferocious draught that was coming through the large full height window at the side of our table, marginally mitigated by the wall radiator that sat at table height. On mentioning this problem, our waiter said that they were hoping to add secondary glazing to the interior to cure this problem as the windows were a listed feature of the building and couldn't be changed. None of which was mentioned at the time we were shown to our table. Potential diners beware. Steer clear of window tables, unless there is a heatwave outside.
Regretfully this dining experience did not meet our expectations and with a plethora of good eateries in Glasgow city centre, we can think of many that would deliver a much better overall experience. Trumpeted as the largest and greatest Thai dining experience ever to hit Scotland, when it opened in 2012, we think there is still some way to go to claim this coveted accolade.
