Firstly the bar and reception area are lovely and they make the place seem lovely. After you enter the lift however the experience changes for the worse.
Our room was tiny, the bathroom was great (probably just a little smaller than the room itself) but to get into it we had to ensure that one person was on the bed as there isn't enough room to swing a car. We are use to budget hotels so we know what we are getting but when it came to bed things got even worse.
The hotel cost £90 and our room was in the front, yes we know its located by some pubs but the windows were that thin that it was like being out ourselves - I heard conversations and could join in with songs being played down the road - this continued into the early hours of the morning.
When the lights were out, the room was still lit by that in the corridors coming in trough the 2 inch gap under the door.
The experience the went from bad to worse. The hotel is sold as a family hotel and ideal for city breaks. My girlfriend is pregnant and I have beer felt as embarrassed in my life with what I was hearing through the paper thin walls. In the corridor there was sex and in the room next to us what sounded like an orgy. Know I understand these things happen but they could be limited (especially in the corridor) by a night porter etc.
The sex orgy ended around 4.00am and I was close to checking out then if I could but god knows what would've been happening on the way to the reception.
Now people say you get what you pay for and I agree with a budget hotel, we recently stayed in Edinburgh Travel lodge for £18 a night and it was superb. The price here however wasn't cheap and I will not be returning to the hotel again and I advise people not to unless you're planning on getting hammered to the point that you will black out and sleep through or, for the seedier Norman Bates types, enjoy listening to live sex shows through the thinnest of walls and who knows if you walk the corridors you might just be allowed to get involved, it's like dogging in doors. Filthy rooms, filthy experience and to top things off £10 for breakfast - we paid £3 to store our luggage at the station to just get out of there.
Booked the Artto for overnight after a wedding as it was a bargain: £44 for a twin room. It did the job - the staff were very friendly and helpful - allowing us to check in early to get ready. The room was pretty basic but had everything you need for a quick stay when you're not spending much time in the room. It had a new carpet, and was clean. There was a decent hair dryer and basic amenities. The bathroom was a little scuffed and had a few issues - the shower hose didn't hang up, the bath was chipped, but it was liveable with.
Some of the previous reviews said the bar wasn't serving alcohol, but it is now, and the bar is pleasant.
If you're at the back of the hotel, be prepared for a bit of noise - the bins we collected just after 7am and the lorries and recycled bottles were far from quiet. We also were disturbed by the maids talking very loudly for 15 minutes while they were working in the corridor early in the morning.
The hotel is ideally located if you need to be near Central Station - it's just across the road.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel as a romantic trip, but as a quick stopover it's fine.
After reading some of the reviews I was very unsure about staying here, but to be honest, I couldn't find anything wrong with the place, it's not the Ritz but its clean and comfortable.
The only thing that was irritating is that the kettle wouldn't fit under the tap in the sink, so if that's my only complaint, how bad is that :-)
Disappointing, it's a very basic budget hotel. Location is good but it's noisy on Friday and Saturday nights. Rooms small, not as shown in photographs, there are no bedside units, in fact our bed was so close to the wall it was difficult to get out. We had a broken shower head which we reported but it wasn't fixed or replaced. Basic tv only 5 regular channels. Everywhere in the hotel smells of Indian food from its restaurant and they have no licence, so you couldn't get a drink at the bar. On Sunday morning the restaurant was expecting 4 for breakfast. A party of 13 arrived and took over the restaurant, leaving the 4 residents having to wait, 2 of them got up and left, we had a 30minute wait for breakfast. We complained but with no effect. Will not stay here again would rather go to a premier inn.
We have just returned from another great 7 day stay at the Artto. Bobby and the staff made us very welcome as usual. Great to have a top of the range Indian (Bombay Blues) next door + all the shops, transport hubs within 5 mins walk. Cant reccomend this hotel enough. Cant wait untill the next time.
Just want to thank Bobby and all the staff for making it a great trip for us AGAIN !
Cheers Bobby ! Our regards to all :-)
