“Living social deal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

First visit with living social deal didn't know what to expect as never tried Persian cuisine ...quiet when we went about 6pm ordered started of calamari and hummus very nice and really gave you a taste for the main course hot and spicy chicken and lamb dish was delish with ample portions ...staff very attentive and pleasant was informed the restaurant had only opened around March was starting to get busier as we were leaving... not in the ideal location but definetly worth a visit and will definetly be back ....

“Amazing ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014 via mobile

This is by far the best persian restaurant I have been to. The most delicious food. Portions are fairly big and the prices are great considering the massive portions and the staff are friendly and helpful. If you want good food, come to this place.

“Tired of Indian and Chinese food? Persian might be the answer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2014

Newly opened in Nelson Street across from the Village Curry House - a building that has seen 3 restaurants in as many years, all fail whilst the Village across the road was heaving last night, Sholeh is waiting for their marketing daily delas offers to kick off and was empty.

Sholeh is a Persian restaurant, and whilst there are not that many about I have eaten in a number of them in Leeds, and was keen to introduce my wife to the regional specials.
We started with
Kashk-e Bademjan - Baked, crushed aubergine slow cooked with seasoned yoghurt and sprinkled with crushed walnuts, sautéed chopped mint and kashk (traditional Persian preserved yoghurt whey) £4.40
along with the Persian verson of a nan. (£1.50)
The starter was tasty and the nan whilst good could have been a little thinner - plenty to share between 2 of us we also ordered a
Mast-o Khiar (v) £3.70
homemade yogurt mixed with finely chopped cucumber and mint
which has a very distinctive creamy flavour also great with the warm nan
Main Courses
First a disappointment - the Sholeh signature dish Fesenjan £9.90 was not available - poor for a Saturday night when the place was empty - a completely unique dish and one of my favorites - I would recommend you try it, basically a dark rich stew - chicken pieces cooked in a rich, sweet and sour puree sauce of pomegranate and ground walnuts

After some rethinking I ordered the
Boneless Chicken Kebab £9.50
Nothing like the Glasgow normal - very moist chicken marinated in garlic, lemon juice and saffron- mild flavour and very tender - came with grilled tomatoes ,grilled chilli and loads of garnish and way too much salad - and a good portion of chicken.

My wife had
Zereshk Polow ba Morgh £8.90
- a whole chicken breast on the bone with a delicious smokey sweet and sour sauce - along with more rice than you can eat (mixed with forest berries, saffron, pistachios and almond)

Here as with many of the Persian restaurants I have been in the grilled meats are superb, however as we are so used to the sauce based Indian and Chinese offerings, we find the meats a little dry, so keep the bowl of yogurt (Mast-o Khiar) to eat with the main course.

Final disappointment was the mint tea - they used Twinings Peppermint tea-bags not fresh mint!

We were the only customers in so seated and served quickly - waitress from the Highlands was delightful and friendly - shame the owner did not bother come and say hello - just sat with paperwork the entire visit.

So - summary - not what you are used to but worth a walk on the unknown side, clean tasty and well presented, good portions and well cooked.
