We had booked into the Etap for three nights over new year, primarily because its location was within easy walking distance of our planned night out and was cheap. I'll definitely think again before booking a hotel solely on this basis! The old adage "you get what you pay for" certainly applies here. However, there were some elements we found totally unnacceptable:
The room was very small and basic, with a shower opening into the room itself, a toilet in a cupboard and a separate wash basin, again located within the room. When we first arrived there wasn't even a bar of soap, let alone shower gel. Although the room was clean overall there were blood stains on the underside of the bunk above the double bed and paint peeling off the walls. Also, throughout our stay empty booze bottles accumulated in the lifts and corridors.
The mattress was extremely hard and thin, impossible to get comfortable on to the point where we commented it was like lying awake on a table top.
There were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, which was compounded by having to pay £1.40 a go for vending machine cup. We didn't try the "all you can eat" buffet breakfast cos didn't fancy spending four quid on a bowl of cereal and a slice of dry toast.
The staff were for the most part pretty rude and unresponsive, communicating mainly in grunts and dirty looks bringing to mind Kevin the Teenager, however we did encounter two reasonably helpful staff members who gave us extra pillows when we tried in vain to make our room comfortable enough to sleep in.
Despite there being signs up all over the hotel saying excessive noise would not be tolerated, we were kept awake until 6am on our second night by a party in the room next door. When we mentioned this to reception we were told "but it was happy new year". Obviously I appreciate that people want to have a good time on new year's eve but we would have appreciated being able to choose when to go to sleep ourselves. Coupled with the uncomfortable mattress situation, we hardly slept at all for the duration of our stay so decided to check out early and try our luck elsewhere. I have never felt the need to do this before.
When we left, we asked for Head Office's address and explained we were leaving early after two excessivly noisy and uncomfortable nights, but were met with blank stares and not even an attempt at an apology or even fundamental customer service.
The cabby on our way to the new hotel explained that the Etap has a reputation as somewhere which underage drinkers will book as a venue for all night parties, and this totally fits with our experience.
The Etap should really desrcibe itself as a hostel, at best - there's just no way that what they're offering constitutes a hotel as most people understand it.
We obviously expected basic accommodation for the price, but really feel that a night's sleep is the most fundamental requirement of a hotel and this was just not forthcoming here.
This review does not quite do justice to how bad our experience was, my partner has just commented that it had to be seen to be believed. If you are a teenager who wants to stay up all night drinking the overpriced alcopops available from reception 24 hours a day and who is not bothered about being able to sleep, or other similarly inclined person, then by all means do visit the Etap. If, like us, you are slightly older and/or wiser and have basic minimum standards for accommodation, the please reconsider, the Etap is not for you.

Stayed at the etap last night as had arranged a family get together in Glasgow. On the surface the location is perfect, rooms are very basic but for £28 for the night it's all we needed and expected. HOWEVER, when we arrived at the hotel, I found blood stains all over the bathroom door, and after washing my hands, went to dry them on what I thought was the hand towel to find a pair of dirty mens boxer shorts hanging over the rail.. clearly the room hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests and the bed had just been made up - the sheets were filthy! Went to reception and they moved us to a clean room. There was one particularly rude male receptionist who was clearly on a complete power trip - spoke to us HORRENDOUSLY after our night out and upon my telling him that he was being a little rude, he proceeded tell us that he would throw us out of HIS hotel. I may be wrong but such a role involves a bit of customer service and courtesy, neither of which we experienced at the etap - only rudeness, condescending remarks, and less that adequate communication. The etap should really be reviewing it's hiring policies, as this one member of staff completely ruined our stay and as a result, our lasting impression of the etap. Will stay at the premier inn in future i think, a little extra cost for tenfold of the quality of customer service experienced at the etap.
