“Excellent trip , a good day out.”

We boarded the train at Chesterfield for the Norwich to Great Yarmouth Trip. The train we travelled on was the diesel locomotive Roy Castle OBE . The train worked to time, the Carriage steward was so polite & very helpfull. We had an enjoyable day out, the weather was kind, the views over the countryside were interesting, we had a pleasant walk around Great Yarmouth . This was the first time we had travelled with West Coast Railways and we would travel with them again.

“Buyer Beware”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2015

My wife purchased tickets for The Dalesman on July 14th. I have travelled the Settle and Carlisle line several times since the mid 1960's but never steam hauled. The Dalesman is promoted as a being steam powered for the most impressive section of the line. However on the day, the steam locomotive was declared a failure before we even made the changeover point at Helifield and the entire journey was with diesel traction. Given that many of the passengers were on board for the steam experience, I asked what compensation West Coast Railways offered when this was not provided. I was told there was no compensation. Subsequent emails to WCR have gone unanswered. Is this arrogance towards customers the same arrogance exhibited earlier in the year to safety matters? I suggest if only a trip over the S&C is required, this can be achieved much more cheaply on a service train. If a steam service is required, be aware you may very well pay a huge premium for non service and be treated with absolute disdain.

“Very good trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2015

Boarded the Dalesman yesterday at Keighley. Train worked to time all day and although train was not full, plenty of space to be comfortable. The steam locomotive 45699 performed perfectly well with a big load of 11 coaches. My only gripe was that the wait in the goods loop at Hellifield is a bit lengthy - 1 hour. Pity this time could not be had at Appleby where you can stretch your legs. S&C scenery on a sunny day wonderful.

“POOR EXPERIENCE AND VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE THEREAFTER”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2015

Purchased tickets for a trip on the 9th July - Settle/Carlisle in Premier Dining - first part of trip great, return trip memorable for all the wrong reasons - train broke down, starter only served before chef left train to get home, recovery train did not arrive and eventually taken as far as Leeds when original destination Wakefield.
Arrived home at just short of midnight some 3 hours later than scheduled.
Immediately contacted customer services with a promise would investigate and respond by COB 2 working days later - 3 e mails and still no response. Is this a trip worth £378 in Premier Dining - should have been but sadly not.
When things go wrong you expect this to be put right in a orderly way - they can't even get this bit right!
