“Lovely apartment”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

We traded one of out timeshare weeks for a 7 day stay in a 2 bedroom villa and were allocated Unit 28 on arrival. Immaculately cleaned, high quality kitchen utensils, a new lounge carpet, very comfortable bed, lots of towels (we were 2 persons in a villa that sleeps 6), a huge televison with lots of FreeView channels, a DVD player and fee WiFI access were just some of the amenities that were provided. The accomodation was one double bed plus 4 bunk beds in the second bedrooms. The lounge curtains were in places a bit threadbare but these were replaced (not at our request) during our stay. The staff are very friendly and the grounds immaculate. The apartment is well insulated and quickly warm up - the temperatures in June were seasonally low - 8 - 12C and we used the heating. We cannot fault anything at the Village although Aviemore is somewhat limited in respect of shopping. A nearby Tesco enables guests to "dine-in" with a wide variety of fresh, frozen and pre-prepared meals on offer although there are plenty of pubs and restauarants in the village for those who "dine-out". Discounts are available at some restuarants for meals on production of the villa entrance key. Did we enjoy the vacation - YES - good walking but be prepared, plenty of opportinities to relax in the apartment and enjoy the area. We are re-booking for 2013.

Well equipped modern apartment supposedly for 4 people. Was fine for 2 but would have been very cramped for any more. The sofa was very uncomfortable and the beds a bit on the hard side. The location is good and within walking distance to the town. having stayed in time share properties both in Europe and the US were rather surprised when we were instructed to strip the bed prior to departure and then have to pay a separate charge for electricity. Surely these facilities are paid for by the annual maintenance charge.

We arrived to a nice welcome and unit ready on time, these apartments are in a good location with plenty of parking and good outside picnic seating for downstairs apartments.
There are no leisure facilities here but you can go to another resort for a swim at £10 per person
The apartment itself was comfortable for 2 adults anymore would be tight the fridge is very small but ok if just the 2 of you.
The crockery was really flithy we couldnt even have a cup of tea before setting to and washing every single item It is disgusting that the cleaners had left it like that.
The oven trays were vile really bad so we managed to buy our own and a fry pan on a trip to Inverness and took them home
We found the dishwasher empty of rinse aide which probably had caused the filthy build up of grime on crockery so we bought some but it wouldnt account for oven dishes.
I cannot understand why this is not checked each week but they do leave dishwasher tablets for you to use.
The shower wasnt draining at all and my husband had to clean out the drain in base which would make you sick if you saw the state of it why is this not done weekly???? by the cleaning staff, after that it drained away fine but the clip holding it up was broken and you could never get it to stay up but at least it worked you may wonder why we didnt report this but it was after they had closed for the night.
That said we had a good holiday it is a quiet area with fantastic views great walks super friendly polite people and the cost of living in Scotland is lower .
Enjoyed days out all around the area and would return again maybe in summer when more attractions will be open.
There is a laundry you can use which is free and they even provide the soap powder a nice touch however there is a notice on the wall saying staff were not allowed to use it but i am sure staff washing was taking up the machines one day .
Electric charges are high but may not be as bad in summer
There is a main road near by but it didnt bother us
This resort is well located with nice grounds in a lovely area close to town with quiet apartments spoilt by a few small problems which could be sorted by regular maintenance and better cleaning

Room Tip: Get a larger one than you need

Well, first impressions of Scandinavian Village were positive. We were in Villa 16.After a pleasant enough welcome, arriving slightly early we were advised to go away and the receptionist would call us when we could check in. Cut a long story short, as we parked we saw the cleaning staff heading for reception. We rereturned and within ten minutes we were in!!

The villas are two bedroomed, we had a double and a quad( 4 single bunks) which would probably be spot on for a hen/ stag weekend or of course a family holiday!

Don't know if I'm spoiled at home but I can't recommend the beds, tried the double which was bearable but not really big enough for two! Rest of week I was in the single which wasn't too bad for a bunk. I'm sure the kids would love it!

I really think the resort needs to revisit the lounge furniture arrangements would anyone buy a sofa or chairs without trying them first? I don't believe that the buyers of this lot could ever have sat in them for more than two minutes. They are diabolical!!

Bathroom facilities are really good, bath and power shower upstairs and cloakroom downstairs, just make sure the waters heated first!

Villas come equipped with a Washer and dryer and also a dishwasher which we didn't require but I'm sure large parties or families would find very useful.

Heating - Is electric, controlled by pads in the ceiling. This means heating downstairs travels from ceiling down and can take a while to warm up, meanwhile upstairs is like an oven and you will feel like a roast chicken by morning!

Kitchen- I was almost satisfied with the kitchen facilities, the standard of the crockery and cutlery is very high, the pots and pans although being "Circulon" were abused and poorly maintained. I know that this is down to the residents but should be monitored. We found dirty pots in the cupboard on our first cooking night which wasn't good!

The Resort - On the whole not bad, depending on your expectations! Very short walk into Aviemore town, if arriving by car it can be confusing! You have to enter by the entrance to the Macdonald resort, just to the left of the "Cairngorm Hotel" and follow the one way system!
There are NO leisure facilities available so you will have to make your own arrangements!

I wouldn't say electicity charges were horrendous, although there were only two of us we didn't scrimp on heat. We didn't use washers or dryer though and we were less than £20 for a week!

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper try to get a block that doesn't back on to the A9!

Aviemore conjured up romantic images first seen on TV years ago when Curling used to be shown. The reality these days is a bit disappointing although improvements are being made. Scandinavian Village stands out as one of the better establishments ethetically and accommodation-wise.

However, money has evidently been spent on the outside of the accommodation rather than the inside. Indeed what has been done inside has in our opinion spoilt it in recent years. If you haven't been there for a while make sure you do not take too much fresh/frozen food with you as the size of the fridge/freezer has shrunk so that more worktop/cupboard space can be provided. There was sufficient there originally in the appartments. The TV has been re-sited to a large unit from where it is impossible to view if a group are sitting at the table. The table and patio/balcony doors are now in such a position which makes access to the patio/balcony difficult particlarly use is made of the peculiarly structured sofa bed. Also we noticed that the balcony table had disappeared. Be advised that the comfort of an upper bed sheet is no longer provided even if requested (take your own). Neither is there any longer a tray for taking tea cups etc. outside. Despite assurances, it is a gamble if you have a drying rack.

Careful management of electricity will keep costs down especially in the summer months.

I understand that it is a 'timeshare' property but don't let that put you off as you would barely know it - and indeed is probably good value if you want it. It is above average comfort nevertheless, although the current leisure situation is not doing the place any favours. We will probably go there again as its position in Aviemore is ideal and although not top of the range, the accommodation is better than average despite the recent changes.

There was a group of 10 of us who went up to Aviemore for the weekend. Everyone thought the villa & apartment were great - homely, spacious, exactly what we needed. The accommodation is very clean with everything you could need for a wee break away from home.
Unfortunately... we got whacked for a considerable electricity bill when we checked out. We knew electricity was extra but were not expecting it to be £5 per person for just 3 nights. The guest folder recommends putting the hot water on and leaving it on for the duration - I'd highly recommend not doing that!
Nice place to stay but watch out for the hidden costs.
