“Good break for small young family and surrounding area”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

Enjoyed a 4 night stay at this hotel. Booked the dinner bed and breakfast deal and our 5 year old son could eat free.

Price:
was good and much cheaper than other options we looked at from self-catering holidays. Staff were very friendly and helpful apart from one guy who didn't look like he wanted to be there, but this did not spoil our stay.

Room:
was nice and the beds were comfy. Some noise from other rooms, but not bad, as when checking out the facilities this hotel is aimed at young families so there are a few kids around.
From reading other reviews of this Hotel some people have complained about the hotel being dated, busy with kids and having to queue for breakfast and dinner. I think this is a bit unfair as you get what you pay for and more. If you're looking for luxury and fancy finishes this is not the place to go. Saying that it is far from Haven or Butlins style holidays and it is much cleaner and better kept.

Food:
was good and had alot to choose from, soups/ salads/ pizza, pasta, puddings and ice-cream. We used the main dinning hall area where all food, not drinks, (except water) was included in the price. There is an option to use other dinning areas with a £16 allowance but this only pays for one main meal as the menus are expensive. All dinning must be booked and we recommend you pre-book dinner before arriving a couple of days in advance. Times from 17:30-21:00. The problem we found with using this service was we had to cut our days out short to be back in time for dinner. We tried using the Foyer area where booking is not required, but it would have taken over 1 hour to be served, so went to Aviemore for dinner. Breakfast is served 7:30-10:00. 9-10am seemed to be the busiest times, so worth getting up a bit earlier.

Facilities :
were good and more to do when the weather is dry. Play park is a good size for small children and there is a tennis/ basket ball court. The Outdoor Zone is not bad but only kept our Son occupied for half a hour. Swimming pool is small but a good enough size for kids to have fun with a separate swimmers pool. Our son enjoyed the swimming the most with no need to book, just turn up apart for adult only swimming from 5-6:30pm. Changing rooms however are very small with no family changing options only male and female changing areas. Can be a bit awkward when it gets busy as there is only one bench in the male changing room. Our son enjoyed the Fun House arcade, putting and pool table. Rates are reduced for residents of the Hotel.

Things to do:
outside of the Hotel grounds were good. We visited Landmark which we spent the whole day at. The Funicular railway is very over priced and would not recommend a young child to go as there is not alot to do. If adults are going walking or to take photographs it's fine and maybe better during the snowy season but young kids might find it boring. Horse riding at Carrbridge pony trekking was good and reasonably priced. The local Rothimurcus site would only do a small trek for children under 8 yrs old so we opted for the longer more value for money Carrbridge option. Grass sledging near Loch Morlich was fun as was the Loch on a nice day.
Loch Ness visitor centre was good but a hour drive from the hotel.

Room Tip: Only from small young families Book dinner early Go for breakfast before 9am Once would be enough...

Great that the kids are catered for but the areas for adults need some attention. Overall bit shabby and overpriced. Pool etc in real need of some upgrading. You could be anywhere but at least 5mins out of hotel you know you are in the Highlands. Staff friendly and helpful!

Spent one night at this hotel. We knew that there was no elevator but booked there just the same since we were on low budget and was the cheapest and location was good. Problem was solved since the receptionist asked for a porter to carry our luggage to the 2nd floor.

Room was small, enough for 2 people. Buffet Breakfast was divine, different sorts of danish pastry (couldn't get enough), English breakfast etc, everything was excellent and lovely.

We stayed two nights last week with our two boys (13 and 2). The room is small and cramped and during the hot weather the room was stuffy and has no air con.
Watch out for the bar prices. A large Pinot Grigio £9.00! Be aware the woodshed bar serves the same drinks but at cheaper prices!!! Ridiculous if you ask me.
The food in the bistro restaurant is lovely but the Italian buffet is terrible. Cold or warm food that lacks any imagination or creativity. Meatballs were solid like snooker balls and the pasta was very, very greasy. If you ask for gluten free pasta be warned that is all you get, pasta, just past with no sauce, dry plain pasta!

Stayed there for 2 nights last week with my boys aged 6 and 9. Almost didn't book this hotel after reading some of the very fussy reviews but glad we did.

Nice hotel, room warm but not unbearable, lovely view of the forest outside window which caused great excitement when we saw a red squirrel right outside !!

The pool area was excellent for the kids and I managed to get some lengths done as they cavorted on the slide.

I liked the way you could book the restaurants as soon as you arrived. The buffet area was pleasant and the second night we used the bistro restaurant which was lovely.

Breakfast was busy but went earlier 2nd morning and no queues then. All in all an enjoyable stay.

We stayed at the hotel to meet a family group. The main problem was the room being far too hot and stuffy, particularly as the window did not open wide (as a safety feature). The building is fairly old and, whilst clean and comfortable (temperature issues apart), this shows in the poor ventilation - the room desperately needed air-conditioning! Also the main bar was expensive and had a poor range of beers/ales (there is an award winning local brewery in Aviemore, about 3-4 miles away, would it be too much to ask for the hotel to support a local producer and stock at least 1 of these ales on tap in the main bar?). The range of single-malt Whisky was better, however, very expensive. The restaurant was ok, but nothing spectacular, as was the breakfast - we have had far nicer meals (and, indeed, rooms) for a lot less money. In short, it is in a great location for activities, but the Hotel is in definite need of a comprehensive refurbishment (apart from the main lobby area - this is a really good space for meeting people or just chilling out).

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. As the hot temperatures recently experienced are unusual for our area we have no plans now, or in the future, to install air conditioning. The beer that you refer to is available in our Woodshed Bar which is locate within the hotel grounds, they also have a wide range of whisky's available. The Woodshed is also child free from 8pm each evening with live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings.
