Owner description: Steam through the stunning Scottish Highlands in style. Our steam engines take you on a very special trip through the Cairngorms National Park as you travel between Aviemore, Boat of Garten and Broomhill. Why not make your trip extra special with one of our dining on board options: Light Lunch offers soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee; Afternoon Tea has some sandwiches, scones with jam and cream followed by some delicious cakes; or enjoy a full three course Sunday Lunch or Dinner. Why not upgrade to First Class to enjoy a meal in one of our compartments, finely decorated in it's own tartan, with vintage British Rail mirrors and luggage racks inside. Split your trip up with a visit to Boat of Garten to explore some fantastic walk trails or bring your bike on board to explore the great cycle routes in the area. See if you can beat the train back from Broomhill on your bike!We are also taking part in the Great Railway Treasure Hunt 2013, so there's plenty for the kids to do on the trip!

My husband and I decided to take family on this journey whilst they were visiting us. This is something we had been meaning to do for a while.
However the excitement of the trip soon turned to disappointment.
This train journey takes you on a 15 mile trip in a straight line and back again, not exactly through scenic Cairngorm mountains.
We spent most of the 90 minute journey stationary, at least 10-15 minutes at each stop.
Aviemore has some spectacular views but unfortunately we did not see any that would have a lasting memory.
This is not something I would do again or recommend to family or friends.
The price for this service was rather steep and not befitting of the trip that we got. Very disappointing.

Thank you for taking the time to review your trip with Strathspey Railway. All feedback is genuinely appreciated and we do deliberate our visitors’ experiences on board our vintage trains.
We offer a 20 mile round trip (taking between 90 and 100 minutes) between Aviemore, Boat of Garten and Broomhill and many stunning sights of the Cairgnorms National Park can be viewed on board our trains and at our Stations.
We are disappointed to hear your review of the scenery. The stunning views the Scottish Highlands deliver played a significant role in Lonely Planet deeming us the third best country in the world to visit in 2014!
As recently as 8th of August our Railway had a 5 Star Trip Advisor Review commending the “fantastic views” our visitor enjoyed on their trip. Another review on 6th August also cited the “spectacular views” that will live long from their trip.
Sights of the Cairngorms Mountains (Britain’s highest and most massive mountain range), the majestic River Spey (the country’s second longest fastest flowing upwards River), the country’s biggest and best ancient forests and much more are on offer.
We allow time at each station for visitors to get off board and get some pictures of the stunning views – this is particularly the case for our Broomhill Station, which offers the most stunning vista of the Cairngorms of all of our Stations. Getting off the train at Broomhill, visitors will see most of our visitors (families and older guests) get off the train to get some pictures, get up close to our vintage engines, speak with the driver and some lucky guests even get up to our footplate and ‘toot’ the whistle!
As a not for profit charitable trust we do not look to make any profit from our operations, instead investing all income into our rolling stock, stations and other areas that enable us to provide this unique experience to the 60,000 visitors we attract. I can assure you that our pricing structure is designed to be affordable, with our visitors in mind. We take care in ensuring that we are offering great value for money, and by allowing visitors the opportunity to bring dogs, bikes, packed lunches on board at no extra cost, we feel we are achieving this.

Kind regards
William Picken

Set out with high expectations of wonderful views along a trip through the national park. The reality was a short journey, with views that are, at best pleasant. Actually as much time still as travelling. Generally felt disappointed and the experience was underwheling. Best saved for steam train enthusiasts! At £13.95 per adult this is not good value.

All three generations enjoyed our trip with the introduction to steam trains a fascination for the youngest members of our party. We had a twin pram & the guard was very helpful in storing this in the guard's van. Fantastic views over towards Cairngorms and even the immediate woodland & farmland surrounding the line.
The seats are so comfy and will be a new experience for those of a younger age.
The guard is also the ticket collector & was happy to answer questions & was very helpful.
There are a couple of stops (if travelling from Aviemore) and these give good photo taking opportunities.
The gift shop was pretty reasonable price wise & had pocket money priced items for kids. Staff in the shop were very friendly & helpful.
Certainly worth considering and you will find times and more details on their web site.
