“Real 5* Accommodation”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

Stayed the one night whilst heading up to John O'Groats. It's a real beautiful B&B everything was spotless and the breakfast was excellent. If you are eating out please visit Pizzariach and not the La Taverna on the roundabout. We had originally planned to visit Pizzariach but was put off by the lady owner of the B&B she quickly booked us into the La Taverna but once we got there we waited around for 5 min then quickly left (although the place was really busy) glad we did the food and cleanliness was excellent.

The setting avoids the crowds of downtown Aviemore, which is nice; it's also right next door to the Rothiemurchus activities center, perfect if you want to go horseback riding. The decor is fresh, with the pastel tartan fabrics brightened by more vibrant matching shades in the lamps. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, even the "smaller" room on the first floor. Shelagh has thought of every detail, from the stool in the entry way for removing your hiking books, to the right number of plugs, to free wifi, to an iPad for guest use in the living room, to blackout curtains and a pillow menu. Really nice to have a licensed inn, so you can have a tot of single malt after a long day's hike and not have to drive anywhere. (Be sure to have a car for this location.) Shelagh was very accommodating to our gluten-free needs, and even put a little GF treat in my sister's room for her. She is also very knowledgeable about food, and not only puts on a nice breakfast, but scored us some excellent dinner reservations. The whole establishment is spotless and beautifully maintained. I highly recommend this place. We stayed in the first room on the left at the top of the stairs.

I concur with everything said before. Shelagh's attention to detail results in one of the best places we've ever stayed at! Great recommendations for local restaurants, things to do and see. Everything was spotless and on its place.

The Old Minister's is a relatively recently refurbished guest house close to Aviemore. There was an advantage in staying at Inverdruie rather than in Aviemore itself - quieter & within walking distance of local attractions. If you want cheap or very corporate (ie dull & could be anywhere), you may prefer somewhere else. If you want a well placed home from home with added extras, book the Old Ministers!
The public rooms and bedrooms are comfortable, immaculately clean and furnished to a high standard. The Old Ministers offers excellent value. Bedrooms are very well equipped and there are several nice touches - hand made biscuits, choice of teas/coffees, fresh milk, complimentary sherry. Breakfast was excellent & seing wild birds and a red squirrel from the dining room a bonus. The guest lounge has plenty of books on the local area and an ipad for guest use. Nice touch. Having just stayed in what purports to be a 5* hotel in Edinburgh, this was a far superior experience..
We hadn't appreciated the check in time of 4-6 and were late, so called ahead. For a small business I can appreciate that late guests are an inconvenience. Having initially seemed unimpressed with our lateness, on arrival, Shelagh could not have been more helpful in asking us what we wanted to do while staying, giving tailored advice on where to go and where to eat and made a booking for us. Dinner is available by prior arrangement & judging by the excellent breakfast, we'd book dinner on a return visit. The whole house is available to be booked for self-catering, which would be great for a group for a holiday or Christmas. The reason for our trip was to scatter my Mum's ashes at a place she loved in the area. That meant our trip came with mixed emotions. We couldn't have found a better place to stay at this time.

We only had one night at the B & B but it was a delight. Our host, Shelagh, could not have been more welcoming. The accommodation is excellent and breakfast was generous and specially cooked for each guest. We were given great advice and the warmest reception.

This is a wonderful place in every respect. Our kingsize-bed room was spotless and tastefully furnished; the water pressure was the best we'd experienced in any B&B in Scotland; the bed linens and towels were of a high quality. Breakfast was delicious -- eggs benedict with cured (smoked) salmon, good coffee. The breakfast room itself (and the handsome sitting room next door) is worthy of a photo spread in a shelter magazine. This was the best B&B of four we stayed in during our visit in the Highlands. There is a small carafe of "drink me" sherry in the rooms, coffee and tea (and milk available from a fridge downstairs). Now, the only thing that was amiss was a certain coolness of the hostess: she didn't really welcome us, she didn't introduce herself. She DID return my smile but I got the impression that's because I smiled first. She explained how the door worked (combo lock), asked us to register sometime in the book, asked us to pick a time for breakfast. When I asked about internet accesss, she directed me to the book of services in the room. On the other hand, she went out of her way to give us walking directions to the restaurant where we had reservations that evening. So it is a matter of being really formal and proper. I think she would be surprised if anyone described her as cold or uncaring. Would I come back? Oh yeah...

I stayed with my two sons, one night, early July 2013. The reviews have it exactly right:
1. Lovely lovely building, fully updated, many warm welcoming touches -- a shelf of all the very latest DVDs is an example I don't think I saw others mention to choose from in the lovely sitting room. It is very small (5 rooms) but that's the charm.
2. You cannot beat the location for exploring Cairngorms National Park. Period.
3. Shelagh will directly book you at the right restaurants the minute you arrive or (better advice!) call her in advance and get that done. Her guests are respected and treated well by the restaurants. I sort of loved that the first words out of her mouth on our check in were "There are 14 restaurants in Aviemore. Twelve are terrible. [true that!]", as she set about getting us booked immediately where we belonged.
4. Shelagh The innkeeper is a bit of an acquired taste, I get that aspect of the reviews. Shelagh has a sort of odd demeanor and many rules for her own sanity (that could be cured by hiring some staff, by the way!) But I concluded her heart and intentions were welcoming and pure. I think she lives in terror of these online reviews, LOL.
5. Inn was full. No hot water for the last person to shower in the party. Shelagh reported that she can "fix' this, if you only tell her. But it was by then too late ... she was in the middle of cooking breakfasts.
6. Our morning activity was quad trekking (so fun, do it) which was about 25 yards from her front door. Loved Rothiemurchus. Would love to return in winter.
