Description: We are an award winning department store based in beautiful Beauly in The Highlands of Scotland. We are the Best Gift Retailer Scotland 2015 and also Finalist Best Lifestyle, Homewares and Gifts 2016. Our shop is a mini, bespoke department store with a tendency towards being slightly bonkers. We showcase the very best selection of clothing, gifts, books, music and smellies so make sure you have plenty time to spare when you step through our doors. You could be with us for some time. We are shopping heaven. As Roald Dahl said "Tremendous things are in store for you! Wonderful surprises await you!"

When in Beauly we always visit Corner on the Square for food. Today we departed from that and decided to give the Old Schoolhouse a try out. Big mistake! On entering we joined a small queue in the corridor leading to the cafe entrance and mixing with the toilet queue. The staff member told us they were busy and offered a table in the " heated and covered" patio area which was "quieter". Well that was true as it consists of a small tired tent type structure not dissimilar to a caravan awning and erected on the lock block formerly part of te car park. Three cheap metal tables (ours dirty) with cold metal chairs, one table occupied by a miserable cold looking couple. A smelly noisy industrial type heater in the corner completed the sad and austere atmosphere. So we sat and waited then waited a bit more. Ten minutes passed and no sign of a waitress or even a menu. Enough. On exiting through the cafe ( with empty tables) a staff member asked if they could help us. Well yes you can, do you know the cure for hypothermia and inhalation of noxious fumes? Thought not said. We said no thanks and left. Straight to warm Corner on the Square and seated and served quickly and pleasantly. Seriously Old Schoolhouse a truly abysmal experience and not a chance of ever repeating it. I have no idea how good your food is and I will never find out. So if you are visiting and offered the " patio area" decline and go elsewhere.

Now a lovely gift shop with lots of good ideas and beautiful items, a little on the expensive side but really worth a visit.

My partner and I popped in for a "quick bowl of soup" after a bracing walk. We were quickly shown to a table and given a menu, and made our selection.
We then waited - and waited - and waited. After 15 minutes of trying in vain to catch the attention of one of 4 or 5 young waitresses (and seeing other tables who'd arrived after us get served) we decided we'd had enough, and left.
We went back to Corner on the Square - our usual choice in Beauly, as it has lovely food and friendly service.
We'd been recommended to try the Old School - but we will not be going back!

Not being able to eat meat or any of its derivatives I struggled to find something that I liked. In the end had a cheese sandwich with a small salad on the side of the plate...this I did not eat as it was covered in an oil dressing...why do some cafe's put a dressing on without asking if it is required...are they hiding limp lettuce !!!!
For the cost of nearly £6 I could have gone and bought a few loaves and cheese and had a feast !!
When in the area again I will call in to see if the menu has changed at all
As someone else stated 'dirty dishes' here is my bit on that - to see them not being cleared from the tables when customers leave was slightly off-putting !!
Staff were friendly and polite !!
