“weekend at the Caley”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

We spent 2 weekends there. It was comfortable & friendly and did a hearty breakfast.Comfy beds and I say beds as I have stayed there before. Warm and cosy, plenty hot water and clean towels! A big thank-you to Iain, his partner and his lovely staff, we'll be back!

Stayed here with a couple of mates for the Bealach Mhor Sportive. Having read some of the reviews I was not sure what to expect but feared the worst. I am pleased to say it was absolutely fine, the building may be old and the decor perhaps dated but my room was clean and the bed was comfy. The owner Iain was pleasant and friendly and undeserving of the some of the comments that have been posted. The persons that posted these should be ashamed! The Caledonian is a quirky old hotel, if you go expecting 4 star accommodation you will be disappointed but if you want a decent bed and a hearty breakfast you could do a lot worse.

Pre booked this trip to get some serious walking done in the Highlands with my mate. I phoned the owner (Iain?) the day before and confirmed everything ok and told him approximate time of our arrival. Late afternoon, as arranged, we arrived after a nine hour drive to find the front door locked - there was a phone number scrawled on a piece of paper stuck to the door. We tried the "bell", banged on the door, and phoned but the number was engaged. After half an hour a van full of workmen arrived who had been staying and gave us an "update" on what to expect - this was not an auspicious start. They banged on the door even more violently than us and eventually a woman (Kath?)came to let us in . She was full of excuses about the batteries in the bell not working and how she had been on the phone and her husband being asleep etc. We were shown to our room (number 5) along creaking dark corridors which initially smelled very musty, damp and old. We were told that the front door would be locked in the evening too and if we needed to get back in, we would need to ring the bell and someone would let us in - no matter how late. Yes, everything is very, very dated and our TV did not work in the room, but it was clean and the bathroom although lacking modernity was functional with no lack of hot water. We arranged for an early breakfast the following day (7.00 am) but everything was in darkness and Iain arrived at 07:40 looking very perplexed and said he had not heard his alarm!! In conjunction with Iain, a very charming and sweet young waitress / maid (Magda?) helped with the breakfasts over the following days whilst Iain spent some time talking to us about our walking adventures. On a positive note, the somewhat spartan bedroom was cleaned and tidied each day and the front door was indeed opened each night to let us in when we returned from drinking and dining elsewhere - no matter how late. The breakfasts were huge and there was no shortage of options if you asked. It is also very competitively priced. Sadly, the overall impression of the Caledonian is one of faded glory and the owners / hosts seem to have accepted that no amount of friendliness can cover the inadequacies of a building that needs major refurbishment and updating. Yes there is "character" but it borders on the unacceptable given it is 2013. There are many who will return given their previous experiences but we definitely won't be.

Room Tip: Room 5 - large but TV doesn't work and the window is difficult to close if you need to shut out...

My fiance, her daughter and I booked in for 2 nights but we walked out after less than 10 minutes.
The smell of stale urine that permeated the place made us all gag, there was dog poo lying in the courtyard below the "smokers" balcony, I say smokers balcony as there was an ash tray there that looked like it hadn't been emptied for a week or more.
Avoid this place at all costs

Room Tip: Avoid like the plague

Great breakfast with lovely Scottish bacon etc. talked with other guests over breakfast which was interesting . Basic rooms but clean. No extras like shower gel etc. kettle and cups fortea/coffee making. Somewhat dated but fine to stay in and moderately priced. Car parking on pavement outside door. Wifi provided which was great.
Outside would not inspire you to stay but fine facilities inside!
Unusual take on aspects of providing for tourists ! Quirky owner but helpful.

Don't expect 5 star hotel but Ian & Cath were wonderful hosts - our room was both clean and had a lovely view over the square.
I have read some of the personally insulting reviews about the owners which were shocking and the reviewers should be ashamed of themselves.
Owners, guests, Ian's big breakfast, the dogs - we salute you

Thanks

My partner and I had an urgent requirement to stay in Beauly, and on checking the internet, this was the only accommodation available for the period we required.

When we arrived, we were met by a member of staff who gave us our key and took us up to our en-suite room (room 5) which was bright and airy, and had a plentiful supply of fresh towels etc. We met the owners, Ian and Kath later in the afternoon, and they were most welcoming, and very helpful throughout our stay, and both were extremely knowledgeable about the local/surrounding areas.

An evening in the lounge bar was most enjoyable, the locals were all very friendly, and all the drinks were of excellent quality, and very reasonably priced.

I can accept that people look for different things in a hotel, and would always encourage open, honest and reasonable reporting, but some of the reviews on this site are both personally insulting and derogatory in the opinions expressed about the owners, and certainly do not reflect the real people as I met them.

The Caledonian is an old listed building, and as such, does have narrow passages (by todays standards) creaky floorboards, all of which add character to the property, and as one of he previous comments advises, 'if you want a sanitized impersonal hotel, this is not for you', but if you want genuine helpful people, enjoy freshly cooked food to order (especially Ian's breakfast)and a good nights sleep, then this ticks all the boxes.

Room Tip: Room 5 Looks over the Square, and an accordionist and pipe-band play on a Thursday evening.
