The Queen Mother's Castle of Mey: That was a nice visit.

At the door were were greeted by Nancy who knew QM since she was a girl. All her family farmed and worked for her. She was very pleased that the QM put the place into a charitable trust, otherwise they could have been homeless. QM used to visit the castle for a few weeks twice a year - March & August ever since she bought the place after her husband's death in 1952. All over were her personal items, photos, shoes, her favourite coat, even an outfit. In each room the guides told stories from their personal knowledge - one as a policeman. Some didn't know the QM, but spoke of Prince Charles who comes for 10 days every year and religiously does some of things that his grandmother did, even to picking a vase of sweet peas.

The views were great too.

Wheelchair access probably limited - the QM went up some tricky steps when she was 101

“Gorgeous Gardens”

The walled garden is stunning, the roses smell amazing and plenty of local flora and fauna. The animal centre is great, we saw the most adorable ducklings and goslings. Worth a visit. Didn't tour the house but will be back to visit again

A lovely castle to visit and discover a bit more about the Queen Mother. Guided tours and our tour guide was very knowledgeable.

“Lots to see and do at the Castle of Mey”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

My wife and I had a very enjoyable visit earlier this month. We had been meaning to visit for some time and were very glad that we eventually did.

The tour was first class made so by the excellent guide. The shop and restaurant were also very good.

The extension in which the above and toilets are located is, as you would expect, very well constructed and sympathetic to the other building.

The small animals enclosure has something for children of all ages.

The WW1 Exhibition is very good but it is a wee bit disappointing that signposting to this temporary exhibition is not better. There are two popups but they do not say where the exhibition is held and I had to ask a member of staff for specific directions.

That apart it a place we would heartily recommend travellers to the area should visit.
