“Excellent stay”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

We booked at the last minute and so were a little worried to be told that the rooms were smaller than the other double rooms in the hotel. We needn't have been. They were much larger than in many hotels and we have stayed in a few. We were welcomed by Rob who showed us around the hotel before taking us to our rooms. The hotel rooms are comfortable and have everything a weary traveller needs including baths in the larger rooms. Being adjacent to the coast most rooms have a sea view; there is a short walk to the beach. The garden is spacious and overlooks the beach from the top of the cliffs; a good place to enjoy a drink from the bar as is the residents' lounge. Good food and reasonably priced.

This charming country hotel is run by a young couple who go the extra mile to ensure that their guests are happy and well cared for. Our room was very large and the bathroom new and immaculate. We arrived a little late but got a warm and friendly reception. The highlight was the 6-course dinner (GBP 30,00/person), was of an extremely high level, beautifully presented and delicious. The hotel is remote, which we love, so I can highly recommend that you book in advance for dinner. The north-west coast of Scotland is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and finding this little gem was a stroke of luck. There is a cosy lounge with internet and a well prepared breakfast with beautiful views over the water towards Orkney Islands.

Far away from "the city" ... this hotel offers cosy hotel rooms, excellent food [dinner and breakfast too] and an extensive [affordable] malt whisky selection. They also have a WLAN [which I recommend to not use, to really enjoy the seclusion, the quietness] and a living room. From the hotel it is a 20 minute walk to the beach and a short distance [car + walk] to the puffins. We went there - nobody but us and 100s of puffins and many other birds for hours. You're looking for something quiet, cosy, good food and mostly "cool" [sic] weather? This is it!

On a trip around the North of Scotland my wife and I had been around the Bettyhill area then had a nice sunny afternoon on the beach and before heading home thought we should have a relaxing drink somewhere nice. Finding nowhere open we thought we should try the Melvich Hotel as it had good reviews but on a hot Tuesday afternoon at about 4pm we found the place closed. The bar was closed Monday and Tuesday and other days only open from 5pm. Being peak tourist season we found this to be very strange and not a very good advert for the area. Will not be back.

The hotel and restaurant were recommended to us by Secret Scotland. To cut a long story short, we booked the Melvich Hotel restaurant at the last minute. They usually need 2 or 3 days notice as everything is cooked fresh but thankfully chef could fit us in! You might think £30 before drinks is at the higher end of the budget but for 6 courses and the quality of the food, it is a very reasonnable price. Everything was so fresh and delicious - it's one of the best meals we've ever had! The staff are friendly, the food is second to none and the views are stunning! You do not want to miss this!

My wife and I wanted to make it to the north coast on our second trip to Scotland. A lot of research brought us to the Melvich Hotel and it was probably the best choice of our trip. The owners have made this into an excellently cozy, clean, and beautiful property in one of the more remote areas of Scotland. The rooms are large and well decorated and the beds are comfortable. If you're one the sea side of the hotel the views are stunning and you can see Orkney if the weather is fair. Upon arrival, we were treated like friends as the owner took the time to talk to us and make suggestions about where to go and what to see. We are not the most adventurous eaters so we are hesitant with set menus but our itinerary let us eat at the hotel one night and Mr. Wyke did not disappoint. The set menu dinner was excellent and highly recommended if you stay. Breakfast was equally delicious. This is certainly a place I would not hesitate to stay at again and would recommend to anybody looking to stay on Scotland's beautiful north coast.

A very good choice. My wife and I stayed for one night on our "tour" of the highlands. We chose Melvich Hotel by chance and were delighted we had done so. The staff are super-friendly and helpful. The set evening meal (five tasting courses) was excellent and tremendous value. The wines and drinks are well priced. We were in the bar afterwards and were made to feel very welcome by the staff and locals.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the Loch.
