My husband and I stayed here for a night before catching an early morning ferry to Orkney for the St. Magnus International Festival. Everything about our stay was cozy, relaxed, and first-class. Our room was lovely, with a beautiful en suite. The hosts here are wonderful and friendly, and they even called ahead to one of the local restaurants in Thurso to work out a late vegetarian dinner for us. The breakfast was delicious, and we enjoyed the stunning sea views from the breakfast room immensely. We were grateful for the helpful information that our hosts gave us about both Thurso and Orkney, and we felt so welcome and at home after a long drive. Far and away our favorite stay on our month-long trip to the UK. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: There is some unsightly equipment, etc. in the yard behind the building, but honestly the room was s...

This is a place you have to stay. It is a beautifully restored farm house furnished to the highest quality. It is spotlessly clean, run by two lovely people, Carol and Raymond and serves one of the best breakfasts we have ever had. There is so much choice every morning and everything beautifully cooked. Also a good choice of cereals, fruit, juices etc. The rooms are fantastic. We stayed in St Andrews and we can't wait to go back. The views over to Orkney are fantastic.

Thank you to everyone at Pennyland for your great hospitality, all the maps and information from Raymond each morning to help us and your friendliness. We won't forget that and can't wait to come back for another visit. We really did feel like friends when we left.

Room Tip: We stayed in St Andrews which was really beautiful but I am sure whichever one you choose you will n...

Pennyland House is simply wonderful. Rooms, clean comfortable, beautifully furnished. Carol and Raymond work so hard to ensure their guests have a comfortable stay. There is just nothing they could do to improve my stay. Stayed on business for six nights, will be back!!!

Room Tip: Use this place!!!

Like others we only spent one night here on the way to Orkney and Carol was incredibly friendly and helpful. The room and its facilities were excellent as was the breakfast, served by very friendly and efficient staff. Knowing that we were returning to Thurso for a week elsewhere in self catering Carol still offered lots of advice for our return including an open door for any advice (and a wee cup of tea!). Like other TA contributors, we would definitely recommend this B&B.

Lovely comfortable bed and breakfast...passionate and welcoming hosts who could not do enough. The location is good, easy to find if you don't put the post code into GPS. Breakfast was delicious too. Home away from home.....just loved the stay

This has to be one of the best B & B's anywhere. The room we had chosen like the rest of the house was furnished to a very high standard with plenty of space, a comfortable bed and a view over the sea. Our hosts Carol and Raymond were very helpful and this being our first visit to the area pointed us in the right directions for the local sights.
The breakfasts were superb with plenty of choice and an added bonus is the ample parking area.
The only slight disappointment was the lack of any chairs in the bedroom so as to be able to relax more comfortably and enjoy the view ,otherwise the Pennyland is a wonderful place to stay and highly recommended.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Pennyland House is located on the edge of Thurso in a quiet, but convenient location and boasts wonderful views of the Orkney Islands, Dunnet Head, Scrabster and Thurso Bay. It is a three story building dating back over two hundred years. Built in 1780 it is historically noted for being the birthplace of Sir William Alexander Smith, the founder of the Boys Brigade. Over the past few years we have sympathetically renovated this historic building and turned it into a comfortable and interesting bed and breakfast for our guests. Although not yet rated, we are confident that you will not be disappointed with the quality and service during your stay with us. We have enjoyed putting our personal stamp on Pennyland House and have tried to reflect what we believe people want in a 'home from home'. ... more   less
