Thurso Bay Caravan & Camping Park
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Very easy to find - which is great after a long journey. Excellent staff. Lovely, clean Caravan. Lidls Supermarket under 50yards away. There's a good Restaurant on site. We loved the Park's views: The Orkneys and the Old Man of Hoy to the north, Dunnet Head to the east, and 1 of the best waves in Europe (Thurso East) just across the Bay. Last Sunday I saw a Minke Whale surface and "blow" 200yards from our Caravan window!
Dunnet Head Lighthouse, the most northerly point on mainland Britain, is 13miles away and has the best views my wife and I have ever seen - go there on a nice evening and you'll be in for a real treat.
The Birdwatching is superb. A tour of the Castle of Mey is very interesting (14m east). John O'Groats is 20miles away, and there is a pleasant walk from Duncansby Head south to the 2stacks. Walking up Thurso River is also really nice (you can see salmon jumping in the river).

Stayed here one night and honestly it was one night too long. We were greeted by the owner telling us he had been up to his ears in s**t all day thanks to previous visitors putting inappropriate things down the toilets - not really the smiling, warm welcome we experienced everywhere else. Having eventually gotten around to actually checking us in, he took our money, explained the locking mechanism for the toilet - again complaining that he had been required to reitterate to over 50 people this year that the lock worked clockwise not anti-clockwise (very irritated about this) and only after taking the money did he mention that none of his available pitches were suitable for a large motorhome at that time due to recent rain making the grass soggy and if we parked on the grass and got stuck he would not be helping us out! So he told us to park on the road through the caravan park! The road was quite sloped and the van was tilted forward all night even with the levelling blocks. Honestly, if we had not both been too tired to plod on to the nearest layby, we would have insisted on a refund and gone elsewhere. After his endless moans about the toilets, we decided to rely on the van's facilities and get out as soon as we were able. Wont ever be returning.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.

I spent a couple of nights with a touring caravan at this site. The staff were friendly and helpful and the site and facilities immaculately clean and the view of the bay was beautiful.
Touring caravan sites are often some distance from town/village centres so it was a real pleasure to stay at one that was only 10 minutes walk from the shops, restaurants and attractions of Thurso (and I'm a slow walker!). I hope to return sometime.

Just had an overnight camping stay here and had a great time. The site was clean and the staff were extremely friendly. We were given plenty of information about both the site and Thurso itself. They offer the use of blocks for barbeques which was great as the weather was fantastic. The situation is perfect, next to a beautiful beach and path into town. The price was reasonable, £14 for the night for my husband and myself in a 3 man tent. Would definitely recommend this site.

Although the setting is brilliant, there leaves a lot to be desired with regards to the facilities. The toilet block needs a complete facelift. Especially the shower cubicles. The residents of the statics think they are a law unto themselves, fast driving and cutting corners. The number of dogs off the lead and doing their business is disgusting, and they appeared to come from the statics. Thurso is a lovely town. Oh and another point--- CASH ONLY??????? Everything on site is cash only.....including site fees, which we felt was not value for money.
