If you know what to expect from a backpacker's hostle, you will be alright. If not, you are in trouble. Bread and cereal for breakfast, bed OK, clean, but smelled musty, hosts very helpful, room small, hot water plentiful. Fish and chips across the street wonderful--get the salmon!

First impressions, was that it seemed dirty. However on closer inspection it was just about acceptable. The good points were free wi-fi internet access, a free light breakfast and 10% discount on hot take away food downstairs. Your don't have much choice in this part of Scotland. Overall 6 out of 10

My room with an ensuite bath was certainly dusty and dirty. The bunk beds seemingly purchased used from an old prison, the mattresses old and of the cheapest sort possible, the worst springy evil mattress conceived by man. Linens clean, but well used. No towels (use your own) My toilet was broken, the soap dispenser broken, the TP holder broken, the water pressure in the shower a trickle. The smell of the downstairs chip shop never ending. The breakfast was simply cold cereal and big loaves of sliced white bread one could toast. Tea bags of the cheapest sort available, as were milk and sugar.

Other than all the above, it was quite nice... : ) The owners helpful and friendly. If they want to get better ratings they'll have to invest some funds for rehab and maintenance.

-You check in at the chip shop downstairs. Not expected, but it works fine, so nothing wrong with that. The hostel is situated on two levels, one with a common room with free breakfast, wifi and a (slow) computer, as well as some rooms. Our room was on the upper level.

-Ensuite room, the plumbing was loud, but everything fine. Skylights provided nice light to wake up to. Room and beds clean.

-Staff friendly enough, not particularly visible, but they didn't need to be.

-Good location, close to the bus stop and the Thurso beach. Lots of food for the hungry traveller available on the street.

This is a horrible hostel. You checkin at the downstairs fish and chip/chinese place which in itself looks scummy. Once taken to our room it was light with only 4 beds but was filthy. Everything was dirty, sheets had various body hairs visible, shavers and soaps still in bathroom from previous guests. According to their policy we werent allowed to use our own bedding. Beds were extremely uncomfortable we had sore backs the next day. Wifi dodgy and only works occasionally. Kitchen area filthy, breakfast hardly that - a few stale cereals and off milk as it had been left out and not in the fridge. The whole experience was one we wouldn't repeat again. Pricing a rip off for what you receive!

I have stayed in hostels all over the world and have had very few bad experiences so it was disheartening to find one of such poor quality in my own country. The place was filthy, ever surface touched was tacky and the floor had obviously not been cleaned for some time (toenails, and dirt found not just in the corners and hard to clean places!). We didn't touch the breakfast or use the shower as I suspect I'd have been cleaner before use. We had to stay here as we arrived late with a child in tow and no option to look for an alternative (early start the next day). The mattresses should have been skipped years ago as they had the springs and stuffing poking out all over but the bed linen was clean. The beds looked home made (i.e large pieces of metal welded together) and the smell of the chippy downstairs was ever present.

Room Tip: Not the private four bed (room 2 I think). Can't speak for the others as we never saw them. It...

For £20/night, this is a decent place to stay. We got a room to ourselves, en suite bathroom, and full use of the well-stocked kitchen. Not extremely tidy, but what hostel is? Bedding is clean and rooms are clean. Did notice that the chip-shop smell stuck to our clothes a little bit.

Owner/chip shop employees friendly and talkative, but had no qualms complaining to us about bad American guests they've had in the past, which was a little awkward considering we're American.

Board games/movies/etc available for rainy days. Good location, though there's not a whole lot to see in Thurso to be honest. Pamphlets on the area available for guests and only a few blocks from the train station. Allowed us to leave our luggage in the common area while we were out and about on the day we checked out.
