Really friendly. Excellent food, mostly locally sourced. Nothing is too much trouble for staff or management

Locally sourced ingredients and an excellent chef. We enjoyed four great dinners there when we stayed in the hotel Mackays Hotel.

After reading other tripadvisor reviews, it sounded a little too good to be true considering the area. We gave it a go last night and were pleasantly surprised- we had truffle buttered chicken liver parfait and salmon starter followed by the lamb and the pork - all of which was absolutely delicious! We were made to feel very welcome and the staff were all very friendly (as were the fellow customers) and the waiter was particularly attentive. The restaurant itself feels a little tired and could do with updating but this and the lack of music didn't affect the atmosphere as it was completely full and everyone seemed to be having a great time. My only criticism (and it's not through lack of appreciation) is that the dram at the end was a nice thought but didn't meet the quality of the food.
Aside from that carry on what you're doing guys it's great!

I too came here as the French restaurant was closed. I didn't regret my choice. Good service in a family run hotel. I had the parsnip soup - lovely flavour and texture. The rump of beef with mash, fried kale, turnip and roasted tongue was excellent. Beautifully cooked and presented. Lovely medium rare beef. Good cheese and biscuits to finish but the highlight was the main course. Decent red wine. All reasonably priced and very good value for the quality of food and cooking. Friendly , hands on owner, who also gave me a free liqueur and a very nice Old Pulteney malt whisky. Highly recommended and not just because of the free hospitality!
